Description

(No Model.)
C. LINDSTRM.
INDICATOR LOCK.
Patented Sept. 6, 1892.
ANITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES LINDS'IROM, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA.
INDICATOR-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,960, dated September 6, 1892.
Application tiled Apri119, 1892.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES LINDsTRoM, of the city of Altoona, county of Blair, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Lock Attachment, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an attachment to locks, by which a sign is made to indicate whether or not the lock is shut or open.
The nature of my invention will be best uuderstood as described in connection with the drawings, in which it is illustrated, and in which- Figure 1 is a front View of a door provided with my device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, on alarger scale, of my device connected with the door. Fig. 3 is a side elevation or view of the edge of the door, and Fig. 4 is a section on line 1 2 of Fig. 3.
A is the Wall of the chamber; B, the door.
C is a lock of ordinary construction, having a latch D and lock-bolt E.
F is a keyhole through which a key is introduced to act on bolt E. As this is no part of my invention, I have not illustrated the key or its connection with the bolt.
G is a thumb-latch secured 011 the end of a shaft H, to which shaft is secured a nger J, which engages in a recess e of the bolt. In this way'the bolt can be moved by turning shaft H; or, if the bolt is moved by a key, the shaft H turns to a corresponding degree. This shaft H is a familiar device and is generally only long enough to insure a proper engagement with the bolt. I, however, prolong it,
as indicated at H', providing a bearing in a plate I to sustain its outer end H', as shown.
This plateI may be cast integral with the Serial No. 429,749. (No model.)
vshaft I secure a linger L, which engages in a notch M' of a rod M, which is inserted in a groove P in the edge of the door, the groove being closed by a strip Q.
'lo the top of rod M is secured a plate N, having appropriate inscriptions on its face and preferably situated beneath aplate O,hav ing a slot O', which permits one inscription to be displayed at a time. Obviously as the lock-bolt is moved out or in the shaft H H', turning with it, will thrust the rod Mpp or draw it down, thus moving the inscribed plate to display the appropriate notice.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with a door, a lock-bolt, a shaft H, arranged to turn as bolt moves out and in, a rod M, having a sign N at its top, a plate O, arranged to rinclose the sign and having a slot O' for its display, and a lever L, secured to shaft H and engaged with rod M, as described, so as to move the rod and sign when the bolt is moved.
2. In combination with a door, a lock-bolt, a shaft H, arranged to turn as the bolt moves in or out, said shaft extendingin through the door beyond the lock, a rod M, inserted in the door, a lever L, secured to shaft H and engaged with rod M, a sign at the head of rod M, and an opening O in the side of the door for the display of said sign.
CHARLES LINDSTROM.
