UNITED STATES PATENT 'OEEICE.
WILLIAM S.` JENKINS, LICKINGr,y MISSOURI.
LOCK ATTACHMENT.
SIPECIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 605,720, dated June 14, 1898.
Application filed October 6, 1897.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. JENKINS, of Licking, in thecounty of Texas and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Lock Attachment, of which-the following is a'full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention is an attachment for locks and latches by which it is possible to prevent the insertion of a key, to hold the key immovably in the lock, and to assist the bolt of the latch in its operation with the keeper.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims deine the actual scope of the invention'.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iig'ures.I
Figure l is a sectional view of my invention.l Fig. 2 is anvinterior face view thereof. Fig. 3 is a similarview showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the` line IV IV of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail section taken through the operating-knob of the lock attachment, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary View illustrating the position of the key relative to the lock attachment.
The latch or lock A may be of. the usual construction and is secured to the door B, so as to coact with the keeper C on the doorframe D.
Let into the door B isa face-plate a, extending beneath the latch A vand to which the latch A issecured. The under face of the face-plate a has a slideway a', in which the locking-plate h is mounted. The lockingplate b is capable of projecting outward from the door B, so as to engage beneath the keeper C, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. I. In this position the plate b coacts with the bolt of the latch A, whereby to assist in holding the doorclosed. Y
The key to the latch A is inserted through an opening c in the door Bj The lockingplate b has an L-shaped opening b therein, the vertical part `of which coincides with the keyhole c and the horizontal part of which is capable of receiving the shank of the key when the plate b is moved to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2in which latter position the plate b will lock the key immovably in the'latch A. The plate b is provided with a pin f, adjacent to the opening Serial No. 654,306. (No model.)
h', which prevents the key from being turned when theA plate is moved to hold the key. By moving the plate b to the position shown in full lines by Fig. 3 the keyhole'c will be closed and the insertion of the key will be impossible. tion of the plate b relative to the key when the plate is moved to hold the key in the latch.
The plate b is operated to slide on the plate ct by means of a spindle d, mounted in the face-plate ct and provided with a head d' and a lock-nut d2. The inner end ofv the shank d has an arm e ixed thereto.v This arm extends upwardly and has a stud e projecting into a slot b2, having the form of an inverted V and'produced in the plate b. By swinging the shank d the locking-plate b will be moved to vthe various vpositions above described. When the pin e is in the intermediate and uppermost portion of the slot b2, the lockingplate b is in position to permit the insertion of a key into the latch. When the pin e' is in the left-hand end of the slot b2, the plate b will be projected to the left to closev the keyhole c, and when the pin e is in the opposite or right-hand end of the slot b2 the plate Z) will be held entirely within the slideway af of the face-plate a.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I. The combination of a face-plate having a slideway, a lock-plate mounted in the slideway and having two slots, one of which is L- shaped and adapted for coaction with a key, and the other of which is V-shaped, a shank mounted to rock in the face-plate, and an arm 'fixed Vto the shank and having a portion engaged in the V-shaped slot of the lock-plate.
Fig.^6 illustrates also the posi- 2. The combination with a latch and keeper,
of a face-plate adjacent to the latch, a lockplate sliding on the face-plate and capable of engagement with the keeper, the lock-plate having two slots one of which is L-shaped and juxtaposed to the keyhole of the latch and the other of which is V-shaped, a shank -mounted in the face-plate, and anarm xed to the shank and engaged in the V-shaped slot of the lock-plate.
WILLIAM S. JENKINS.
