RIM-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,947, dated July 2, 1895. Application filed August 20, 1894- Sierial No. 520,773. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. PLEAU, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of NtW Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rim- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of locks known as rim locks, and its object is to provide a lock tha't'cannot be unlocked from the outside by any other instrument or means than by using the key made expressly for it; also to so construct a lock that it will combine simplicity with greater strength than similar locks possess.
I will now describe the mechanism of my improved lock, together with the key that opcrates the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan of the inside of my improved lock with the cover removed. Fig. 2 is a plan of the front of lock, showing the knobs used to lock and unlock the same without using the key and from the outside of door. Fig. 3 is a crosssection through line at :r in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents the key and shows the manner of constructing the same.

Said movement causes the member 01', to be withdrawn from contact with the inner end of bolt 1), permitting the same to have a free longitudinal movement.

m is a guard cast on the inside of casing in the path of the movement of key, the use of which will be explained in connection with the key.
The projections cast on the body of the lock and escutcheon designated by the letters 02 and n, are used to secure the lock and escutcheon to the door and door jambrupon which the same are to be used.
The projections designated by the letter q, form a bearing for the plate which covers the working parts of the lock.

The operation of my improved lock is as follows: In looking, the bolt can be thrown outward by means of the knob h, from theinside of the door, or by means of the key shown in Fig. 4. from the outside of the door. Then the key is inserted in the key slot and turned said bolt 1), outward. In unlocking said lock from the inside, the operator first turns the knob g, to the right, thereby causing the trig d, to swing from behind the end of bolt Z), when said bolt 1), is moved inward by means of the knob h.
. The operation of unlocking by means of the key is as follows: When key is inserted into the keyhole the square portion u, of the key enters the socket j. Then by giving the thumb piece o, a partial turn it causes the projecting memberf, to oscillate on its axis to position shown by the dotted lines, and at the same time causes the member 01, to oscillate through the medium of the arm d thereby causing the trig d, to be withdrawn from behind the end of bolt 6, and assume the position shown by the dotted lines. Then bytnrning the key by means of the thumb piece 8, the ward i, will operate in' the recess 0, and move the bolt inward.
The socket t, and member to, of the key may be made in different shapes without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim- 1. The combination in a rim look, of th bolt 1), having the knob 71, attached to said bolt 1), and sliding in a groove in the body of said lock, with the member f, which has the socket j, arm f, and the knob g, the member d, which has the arm 61 and the trig d, and the spring e, all as and for the purpose set forth.
