` AUGUSTUS HHNE, of Rondout, in the county the bolt; Fig. 4 being an under side view of y case; Fig. 5 being a view of the interior of the UNITED STATES 'PATENT Grinch. y
E. G. F. ARNDT AND AUGUSTUS HUHNE, OF RONDOUT, NEV YORK.
HMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,856, dated November 1l, 18,62.
.To LLZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, E. G. F. ARNDT and of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Door-Locks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon.
The improvements herein recited relate to a lock wherein with only one bolt. the lock may be used as a right or left hand lock, as a latch-1ock, as a night-lock, or a day-lock, the bolt being moved either with or without the key. The case and the different parts of the lock may be made of any metal commonly used in making locks, either by being cast or wrought, or certain parts cast and the other wrought, as is usual in manufacturing locks for doors.
The drawings forming part of this specifica tion represent a door-lock having our improvements, Figure l thereof being a frontelevation of the lock and catch, the bolt being thrown out as used for a latchlock; Fig. 2 being a like view of thelockwith the bolt thrown out to its fullest extent, as when locked, and the button for removing the bolt having been removed; Fig. 3 being a like view of the lock with the bolt out to its fullest extent, and there held by the guard-plate against the button of the bolt with its tumblers detached fromV the lock with the bolt out as a latch-bolt, the inner plate of the lock having been removed, and Fig. 6 being a like view of the lock without the inner plate, the boltbeing thrown fully out or locked.
In each of these gures, where like parts are shown, like letters and marks are used to indicate the parts.
The case of the lock a with the catch or hasp b and the end of the bolt c are so constructed that the lock may be used as a right or left hand lock or latch-lock. The bolt has a coiled or helical spring, d, the tendency of which is to throw it out, secured by a pin, e, to the case of the lock and by a like pin to the bolt. The bolt also has a pair of tumblers, f f, vibrating or susceptible of being moved on pins g g, affixed to the bolt. One of u the tuniblers has a spring, h, which tends to force the tu mblers toward each other, and both have studs or projections z. In one of the tumblers is a hole, j, for the button k.
Through the case of the lock, at a proper point, is a hole for the play of the hub Z of the spindle of the door-knobs. The hub Z, as is shown, has the usual spindle-pole, m, and also has a coiled or helical spring, n, attached to it by a pin at a central point, o, the spring being also attached by a pin, p, to the case of the lock.
Vhen' this lock is used as a latch or catch lock, the studs t' z of the tnmblers rest against the back 'portion or side of the stud g q of the hub l, and the bolt is moved backward by the usual turning of the knobs spindle, the forward movement of the bolt being produced by the action of the spring d. The tendency of the spring a is to keep the hub Zin such position that its studs q q will be in a vertical line-z'. e., a line at right angles to that of the bolt c. This use of the lock is shown more particularly by Fig. 5.
Vhen used as a day-lock, the bits of the key are brought in contact with the projection r of the one tumbler, forcing apart the tumblers, and as the key is further turned, the hits coming in contact with the projection s of the bolt, the bolt is moved forward to the full locking extent, as is indicated by Fig. 6. When fully locked, as is shown by Fig. 6, the studs t' il of the tumblers are in front of the studs g g of -the hub, and consequent-ly the thrust of the bolt under any effort to force it inward will be resisted by the hub.
As a day-lock or as a night-lock, the bolt may be moved by the key from the outer side of the door, and also by any person within the houseV on the inner side of the door by a stud or button, 7c, which is attached to the tumbler, as before stated, at j. The bolt may, however, be held secure When'in the locked position, so that it cannot be moved by the key by the guard-plate t, which, as is shown by Fig. 8, will prevent the button from being moved, and consequently hold firmly the bolt.
A curved slot, u, in the case allows the necessary motions of the button for bolt or for moving it by the key.
moving the with it when operated upon What We claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement of the tuinblers f f in A their relation to the bolt and to the hub so that the hub shall bear the thrust of the bolt when pressure is made at the outer end of it, as set forth.
2. The spring n, as it is attached to and operates upon the hub, as described.
3. The guard-plate t, in combination with the button k1 and tumblers f f, as herein recited.
This specification signed this 11th day of August, 1862.
