Description

UNrrsn Sfrnins Raineri* Ormes.
WILLIAM GOFORTH, OF WINDSOR, MISSOURI.
FASTENER FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHE-S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,402, dated April 8, 1884.
' Application nieu April 26,1883. (Mader.)
clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi' the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
AMy invention relates to sash-locks 5 and it consists in the parts which will be hereinafter described, and pointed ont in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line w x, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the stop. Fig. e shows a modification, and Figs. 5 and 6 show the circles from which the lock is formed, all of which will be described.
One objectof myinvention is to provide a lever sash-lock wherein the axis or shank of the same may be pivoted on the meeting-rail of the lower sash, while the circular portion of the lever is adapted to be passed around a suitable stop secured on the lower or meeting rail of upper sash, the said lever being so constructed that it will extend around the stop and across the joint between the two meetingrails, and have its point rested on the same rail to which the latch is pivoted. This may be accomplished by the construction shown in Fig. 4, wherein AI employ but a single lever and a stop of a form different from that shown in the other iigures.
I prefer to use the form of latch and stop shown in Figs.y l, 2, and 3, as will now be described.
I have only shown the meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes, A B, they being the parts to which the locking mechanism is applied.
The stop a is secured on the lower or meeting rail of thesash A., and is composed ofthe lower or base portion, a', and a top plate, u?, the edges of which top plate project on the opposite sides of the lower portion, c', and
provide the shoulders a?, which are engaged by the levers on the latch, as will be described.
The latch b has its shank t pivoted on the top of the sash B, and it is provided on its swinging end with the levers b2 b3, which are arranged to extend the one on the outer and the other on the inner side of the lower portion, c', of the stop c, and under the projecting portions of the top plate, a?, as shown in Fig. 2. These levers are madesuiiiciently long to permit them to extend across the joint between the meeting-rails, and thereby strengthen the fastenings and hold the sash firmly together. Theseleversand theslotsbetweenthem and the shank portion of the latch are formed in approximately the arc of a circle, the center of which is the pivot-point of the latch, as shown at Figs. 5 and G. It will be seen, therefore, that all force on the latch to effect the unlocking thereof must be exerted in a line curved concentrically with the curve of the levers. Therefore, in a lever-latch constructed substantially as described, it will be difficult, if at all possible, for the latch to be opened by any instrument inserted between the meetingrails,.as is commonly practiced with sash-locks of ordinary construction.
The latch and the stop may be secured directly on the sashes when so desired; but in order to prevent the insertion of any instruments between the meeting-rails, I prefer to employ the plates c c', on which are secured, respectively, the stops a, and the latch b. The plate c is set back a short distance from the meeting edge of the rail of the sash A, to which it is secured, and the plate c is secured on the sash B, and is projected over the meeting edge thereof and over the joint between the rails, and prevents anything being slipped between the rails for the purpose of unlocking the sashes. The latch b is provided with a inger-post or handle, d, for the purpose of readily operating the same. The lever is tapered from its point to its junction with the shank so that as it is turned under the stop it will draw the sash, to which the latter is fastened up firmly into place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1sm i The sash-mstening herein described, comroo posed of the latch having its shank pivoted on substantially as described, and for the purthe sash B, and provided with the tongue curved poses set forth. io on an arc struck from its pivot and beveled In testimony whereof I affix my signature in from its point upward, and adapted to be swung presence of two witnesses.
5 twice over the joint between sashes A B, and VILLIAM GOFORTH.
the stop having a lateral ledge or plate pro- Witnesses: jeoted from its upper end and arranged on sash G. W. GIVENS,
A in position to be engagedby the latch-lever, MAURICE DICK.
