FASTENER FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,615, dated .1 anuary 26, 1892.

Be it known that I, RICHARD THos. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri,'have invented anew and useful Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sash-fasteners; andthe objects in view are to provide a sash-fastener of cheap and simple construction, adapted to automatically lock together the meeting-rails of two sashes at the time that they are brought into alignment witheach other.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the two meeting-rails of a sash, the same being provided with a sash-lock constructed in accordance with my invention, and shown in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the parts being shown in an unlocked position. Fig. 3 is adetailin perspective of the locking-stud and its securing-plate. Fig. 4. is a similar view of the holding-button. Fig. 5 is a similar View of the locking-hook. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the locking-hooksecuring plate.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the lower meeting-rail of an upper sash, and 2 the upper meeting-rail of the lower sash, which are of the usual construction.
Upon the rail 1, adjacent to its inner edge, is secured a securing-plate 3, oblong in shape and provided with elongated slots 4, through which into the rail are passed screws 5, and by reason of the slots said plate may be adjusted longitudinally. Rising from the plate at about the center of its front edge is a stud (3, provided with an overhanging head 7, at the rear end of which said stud is slotted, as at 8, and a pin 9 passes through the walls of the slot and serves as a pivot-bearing for a small lever 10, provided with a laterally-disposed lug 12.
Secured to the rear edge of the rail 2 is a securing-plate 13, through which screws 14: are passed into the rail. The plate is provided upon its upper side with a vertical lever 20, by which the plate and hook maybe rotated upon the stud. The plateis also provided diametrically opposite the hook with a recess 21. The stud is encircled by a coiled spring 22, one end of which is secured thereto and the opposite end passed around a peg 23 within the curved flange. A pin 24 is located upon the base at one side of the stud 15, near the edge of the plate, and said pin has mounted thereon a turn-button 25. The turn-button 25 is provided with .a rear extension or thumbplate, by which it may be moved, and at its front side with a finger 26, said finger being beveled upon its upper and lower sides, and elevates the laterally-extending lug 12 of the small lever 10 when the sash of the meetingrail 2 is being raised, and when the sash is lowered the lug causes an oscillation of the button for the purpose of liberating the hook, as hereinafter apparent, and is immediately returned to its normal position under thelug bya spring 27, connected with a stud 28 on the plate 13, and at its opposite end passed through a perforation in the button. The button is also provided with a shoulder 29, and the same engages with the notch 21 of the plate 18 when said plate is rotated against said spring to such a point that such engagement may be made. By means of the button the plate may be swung around and held in an unlocked position, so that its hook is out of engagement with the stud 6, and it will be apparent that when in this position the lower sash may be raised without liberating the hook, the lug 12 being struck by the cam end of the turn-button, and the lever 10 thereby elevated out of the way of said turnbutton and offering no obstruction to the elevation of the sash. \Vhen it is desired to lower the sash, it is simply necessary to do so in the usual manner, and as the cam-face of the turn-button comes in contact with the lug 12, which it will be observed has fallen back by gravity to its normal position, said turnbutton is partially rotated, so as to be withdrawn from engagement with the lockingplate 18, and the hook of the latter immediately is thrown to a locked position around the stud 6 by means of the spring 22, and thus an automatic locking of the meeting-rails takes place simply by the lowering of the sash to a closed position, requiring no further attention, and is always looked unless set.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, with the meeting-rails of an upper and a lower sash, of a locking-stud secured to one of the same, a gravity-lever pivoted to the stud and provided with ashoulder, a locking-plate pivoted to the other meeting-rail and provided with a hook, an operating-lever, and a notch, a spring for throwing the plate so that its book is normally in engagement with the said locking-stud, a pivoted turn-button located adjacent to the locking-plate and having an engaging shoulder and a beveled cam-finger, and a spring for normally holding the button so that its finger mounted upon one of the meeting-rails of two sashes and provided with a headed stud and a gravity-lever pivoted therein and provided with a lug, of a securing-plate secured to the other meeting-rail,a stud on the plate, a curved flange mounted on the plate and encircling the stud, a' plate located upon the stud and and a front finger oppositely beveled, and a spring for normally drawing the shoulder of the button into the path-of the notch of the plate, substantially as specified.
