SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 0. 734,621, dated July 28, 1903.

Be it known that I, STEPHEN SHANAHAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at fective form of cover Which will effectively close the box against unauthorized persons.

It is illustrated in the accompauy'ingdrawbox, which may be of cast metal and of the.
ordinary form. It is provided on one side near the top with an opening 5 and on the opposite side with a projection or lug 6 ,'having a recess 7'f0rmed therein to receive a, locking-bolt,hereinafterdescribed. Thecover is indicated at 8 and is provided at one edge on the lower face with a projection or spur 9, which engages the recess or opening 5 in the box. A disk 10 is formed upon or secured to the lower face of the cover centrally thereof, random one side of this is carried a segment 11, Which overhangs the disk and provides a groove or space 12,-which serves to guide the rear end of the locking-bolt 13.-
The outer end of the locking-b0lt is designed. to enter the recess 7 and is guided by lugs 14 and carried by the under face of the cover,
nearfthe outer edge thereof. The inner end of the locking-bolt 13 is enlarged and formed in substantially C shape, the closed side of the C being located'in the groove 12. A
shaft 15 is journaled in the disk 10 and carries itsupper end a disk 16, seated in a recess in the upper face of the cover and provided with oppositely-disposed openings 15 I to receive a suitable tool by which the shaft may be turned. On its under side the shaft carries an arm 18, which has a slightly-contracted portion projecting through the open side of the C-shaped part of the bolt, while the inner portion in proximity to the shaft or pivot is rounded or formed on a curve corresponding to the curve of the head and base of the C.
It will thus be seen that as the shaft is r0- rated and the arm moves the part which projccts through the open side of the locking-bar will engage with one or the other of the pro jecting points 19, and thus according to the 7 direction of rotation will shift the lockingboltinto or out of engagement with the recess in the box. The bolt will be moved until the curved portion at the head or base of the C comes incontact with the correspondingly-rounded portion of the operatingarm, which thus serves as a stop to limit the movement of the lockingbolt.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'is '1. The combination with a street-box, of a cover having a projection on one side adapted 'to engage a recess in the box, a slidinglockingbolt carried by the under side of the cover .adapted to engage a recess in the opposite side of the box, said locking-bolt having a C -shaped head, and an arm pivoted to the under side of the cover Within the C-shaped head and projecting through the open side thereof, a segmental plate overlapping the head of the bolt and guiding the same and a guide for the outer end of the bolt, substantially as described. I

The combination with a street-box, of a cover having a projection on one side adapted to engage a recess in the box, a disk on the under side of the cover, a segmental plate on one side of said disk and spaced therefrom forming a guide, a sliding locking-bolt cartried by said guidelt'o engage a recess in the opposite side of the box, said locking-bolt Witnesses:
