DOOR KNOB.

. JFZHL I ihvrTnn STATES PATENT QFFICEQ CORNELIUS M. BROWVN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO GEORGE VATTS, OF PLAINFIELD, NEWV JERSEY.
DOOR-KNOB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,849, dated March 15, 1898.
Application filed April '7, 1897. Serial ITO. 631,078. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS M. BROWN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knobs and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to enable a knob to serve with greater convenience and ease as an advertising medium by displaying an inscription or advertisement from the front thereof such as will disclose to the person about to open the door any desired information or instructions, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to hereinafterin connection with the description of the working parts.
The invention relates to that class of knobs which are ordinarily used on. doors, doorplates, drawers, and the like, and relates more particularly to the knobs of front doors of residences and dwelling-houses.
The invention consists in the improved hand-knob and in the arrangements and combinations of parts thereof, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figures 1 and 2 are transverse sections taken through the center of the knob in planes at right angles to one another. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the said knob. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion thereof, and Fig. 6 shows a series of interchangeable inscription plates or cards having printed matter thereon adapted to be set in the face of the knob and give information to the party about to manipulate said knob.
In carrying out my invention I first provide a hand-knob having the usual shank a and enlarged heads or hand portions b. Said knob may be of metal, wood, or any other material and may be of any shape or design suitable for the purpose. The body or hand portion of the knob is cored out or chambered and is open at the front, so as to disclose the series of inscriptionor legend boards, cards, or plates 0 set in said knob, an inscription or advertisement being printed upon said boards, cards, or plates 0, as indicated in Fig. 6. Said plates 0 are fitted into the chamber so as to be firmly held in place and yet conveniently removed to admit of a change of the advertisement. To obtain an easy convenient interchange of said plates 0, I have provided a sliding card or plate receptacle d. (Shown in the first four figures'of the drawings.) Said sliding receptacle 61 may be of any material suitable for i the purpose. It is recessed on its forward side to receive the legend or inscription plates, the recess d coinciding with the central opening in the face of the knob. Within saidcentral opening, forward of the said sliding receptacle d, I provide a transparent plate e of glass. This serves to protect the inscription, legend, or advertisement plates from contact with the hands and also serves as a keeper for holding the legend-plates within the legendplate receptacle. The said glass 6 fits into a rabbet or receptacle therefor in any suitable manner. The said sliding receptacle within the chamber of the knob, which extends transversely in the knob, as shown in Fig. 3, is provided with or engages a spring j, which serves to throw the said sliding receptacle outward when released, as heretofore described, so that it may be grasped by the fingers and be withdrawn or partly withdrawn from the socket or chamber to admit of an interchange or arrangement of the advertising-plates.
I prefer to limit the withdrawal of the sliding plate or receptacle, so-that it cannot be detached from the knob, and to this end I prefer to provide either the sliding plate or the hand portion of the knob with a groove f and a suitable stop-pin g to prevent complete withdrawal. To hold the said receptacle within the socket, so that it will not interfere with hand manipulation of the knob, I provide the same with a keeper-band 72, arranged in a peripheral slot formed in the knob, the groove or slot being undercut to receive a dovetail band adapted to be turned within said groove. Said band is provided with an opening through which the said sliding receptacle passes when said opening is brought into coincidence with the transverse chamber for the slide, as indicated in Fig. 3.
By turning the opening in the band into coincidence with the transverse chamber or slideway the slide, acted upon by the spring, will be thrown out through said opening a sufficient distance to admit of the hand grasping the end thereof, the said end being somewhat wedge-shaped, so as to freely enter the said opening, and being provided near its eX- tremity with a notch 'i to admit of the thumbnail being entered therein in drawing the receptacle. By turning the band out of the co: incidence above referred to the said band, after the slideis pushed back against the spring j at the inner end of the slide way, en'- gages the inclined bearings of the wedge-like end, so that the said slide is pushed back to its proper relation to the front opening. Being thus brought into proper coincidence with the front opening in the knob the inscription plates will properly disclose the legend or advertisement thereon to view.
I am aware that various modifications of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction shown, excepting as the state of the art may require.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The improved knob herein described comprising the body portion having a hollow transverse chamber or slideway, a sliding receptacle, a receptacle for legend-plates therein, and an annular band encircling the periphery of the body portion and open to permit the insertion of the sliding receptacle, substantially as set forth.
2. The improved knob herein described comprising a knob with an open front and having a chamber opening at one side in which are arranged removable legend-plates and a strap like part extending continuously around the periphery of the knob for holding said removable plates within the knob, substantially as set forth.
3. The improved knob herein described comprising a knob with an open front and side and grooved periphery and a continuous ring-like strap closing said side opening, substantially as set forth.
4.. The improved knob herein described comprising a knob with an interior chamber and openings at the front and side legendplates, and an encircling strap arranged in a dovetailed groove and holding the legendplates in said chamber, substantially as set forth.
5: The improved knob herein described comprising a chambered knob, a sliding re ceptacle, having an inclined end and an encircling strap or band having an opening for the sliding plate, substantially as set forth.
6. The improved knob herein described comprising a chambered knob, a sliding receptacle having an inclined outer end, a spring bearing against the inner end, a stop for preventing the complete withdrawal of said receptacle and means for holding the said receptacle within the knob, substantially as set forth.
7. The improved knob herein described, comprising the chambered knob-body having an open front and a side opening, a sliding plate arranged in the chamber of said knob and adapted to be drawn outward through said side opening, and a strap arranged at the side of said knob, over said side opening, concealing said opening and holding said sliding plate in place within the knob, substantially as set forth.
8. The improved knob, comprising the chambered knob-body having an open front and a side opening, a sliding plate arranged in the chamber of said knob and adapted to be drawn out through said side opening, a strap arranged at the side of the knob conforming with the circular outlines thereof, and adapted to be turned thereon to cover said side opening and hold said plate in place, substantially as set forth.
9. The improved knob, comprising the chambered knob-body, open at the front and side, a sliding plate arranged in the chamber of said body and adapted to be drawn out through the side opening, a spring normally tending to eject said sliding plate through said side opening and a strap adapted to cover said side opening and hold the plate against the power of the spring, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of March, 1897.
