BADGE-BUTTON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,617, dated August 25, 1896.

To all 1071,0722.- it may concern:

Be it known that I, J AMES H. PATTERSON, of Martinsville, in the county of Morgan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Badge-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a button to be worn in the lapel of the coat to furnish amusement in answer to the thread bare and tiresome comments about the weather. It is to furnish an answer to such senseless questions as Is it hot enough for you 3 Very cold day, isntit 3 Fine weather on young ducks, &c. It is designed to furnish an answer to such questions in a semiautomatic way, and at the same time to furnish a rebuke to the person asking the question, and for this purpose the person to whom the question is addressed simplypoints to his button which is of a special construction adapted to be adjusted to answer any such question, the button being set to correspond to the weather prevailing at the time.

Figure 1 is a face view of the button. Fig. 2 is a back view of the back-plate of the button. Fig. 3 is a central section through the button. Fig. at is a face view of the backplate, and Fig. 5 an inside view of the housing.

In the drawings, A represents the faceplate, which is a metal disk with a quadrantal section cut out of the same, and B is the back-plate, of which a quarter-section always appears through the quadrantal opening of the face-plate. The face-plate A has printed, painted, or otherwise formed upon it the words, Yes, it is, and the back-plate is divided into quarter-sections each one of which bears a different legend, such as Hot,

' Cold, YVet, 0. IL, or any other word which may supply the definite answer, and any one of these words may be made to show through the quadrantal out of the face-plate to supply the complete answer, and for the purpose the back-plate may be turned about the central axis to cause any one of the words to show through.

The face-plate A is rigidly fixed to the housing C, shank D, and flange E, which are all fastened together, and the back-plate B occupies a plane behind the face-plate and between it and the housing 0. In this housing is arranged a s pringsdetent a, which looks into notches or indentations in the rear of the back-plate, corresponding to the subdivisions on its face, so as to lock this backplate in its registering position.

For connecting the front plate A to the housing and its shank said housing is provided on its front side with an integral central projection which passes through the turning plate 13 and is firmly riveted to the front plate A, the turning plate B being of larger diameter than the other parts, so that its periphery projects far enough to permit it to be turned by the thumb and finger.

In making use of my invention I do not confine it to the use specified, but may use it generally as a badge-button for political or partisan purposes, in which case, of course, the inscription would be different, the latter forming no necessary part of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A badge-button comprising a housingplate with shank and flange and a central projection on its front side all made of one piece, a front plate having an opening thro ugh it and rigidly attached to said central projection of the housing, a revoluble plate arranged pivotally upon said central projection of the housing and made of larger diameter than the front plate, and a locking device for said revoluble plate arranged behind the same and within the housing substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A badge-button comprising a housingplate with shank and flange, a front plate having an opening through it and a central rigid connection with the housing and shank, a revoluble plate arranged between the front plate and the housing and made of greater diameter than said parts substantially as shown and described.

3. A badge-button comprising a housingplate with shank and flange, a front plate having an opening and a central rigid connection with the housing and shank, a revoluble plate arranged between the front plate and housing and made of greater diameter than these parts, and a locking device for the revoluble plate arranged between the same and the housing substantially as and for the purpose described.
