Description

A. D. BLAKE.
MILITARY BUTTON.
APPLICATION FILED M0v.27. 1911.

ATTORNEYS ALVA. JD. BLAKE, 015 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
MILITARY BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May Q, IFI
Application filed November 27, 1917. Serial No. 204L284.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnvA D. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Military Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make a military button or locket adapted to carry a miniature photograph or the like.
The invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings in which: I
Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the locket as opened, thus disclosing the back and hinged front of the button.
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation illustrating the button particularly designed for military purposes.
Fig. 3 is a view in section through the button on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 illustrating its hinge, fastening, and the eye by which it is sewed to the garment.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates the circular rear wall of the button here shown as being concaved throughout its central portion and having an annular flange 11 around its edge. This flange is provided as a retainer for a photograph or other card 12 which is held in position within the back by an expanding ring 13. A hinge slot 14 is formed through the flange 11 at a point along the edge of the back to receive a hinge 15-connected with the lid 16 of the locket, which also forms the front face of the button. This lid is of the same outer dimension as the back and has a convexed front portion upon which a design may be impressed. In the present instance the front portion is stamped with an emblem of military significance so that the button may be used upon the uniforms of soldiers and sailors. A spring tongue 17 is formed as a part of the front member 16 and is disposed upon the diametrical opposite side from the hinge to register with a catch opening 18 formed in the flange 11 of the back. In order that the button may be secured to the garment, an eye 19 is fastened to the center of the back, as particularly shown in Fig. 3. a
The operation and utility of the device is evident.
It will thus be seen that the combined button and locket here disclosed, while simple in its construction, affords a convenient means of carrying photographs and other mementos, especially on the persons of soldiers and sailors who do not have pocket space for such purposes.
While I have shown the preferred construction of my combined locket and button as now known to me, it will be understood that various changes in the combination,
construction and arrangement of parts may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim:
A military button comprising a concaved back plate, an annular retaining rim extending inwardly from the edge of the back plate, an expanding ring adapted to be inserted through the retaining rim and extend behind the rim, a convexed front plate of the same diameter as the back plate, a hinge connecting corresponding edges of the plates together, a snapconnecting opposite edges of the plates together, and an eye secured to the back plate for attachment to a garment.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this-specification.
Women or this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the flommissioner of Watentt,
eohlnon, D. It.
