Patented Dec. 7, 1943 Charles F. Mitchel, Rochester, N. Y., assignorto y Bastian Brothers Company, RochestenN; Y., a corporation of New York `Appli,cation May 5,1942, Serial'No. 441,855
(Cl. 'l0-L6) 1 Claim.
This invention relates to; a holding button, forV portraits, emblems,` symbols and the like.
One object of the invention isL to provide` a holder for portraits for identification or; for other purposes on for thel display of emblems, symbols,
and the liketo be carried or wornA by the. user and which includes,` an enclosing casing composed preferably of plasticmaterial andinwhicn the front or the front and back is transparent.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a simple, durable, and inexpensive display or other button composed of any suitable material and which includes an enclosing casing provided with an internal reinforcing member to which and to the casing a garment attaching means is anchored against accidental disconnection.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of elements illustrated in the accompanying drawing and described in the following specification, it being understood that changes may be made in matter of shape, size, and proportions of the various elements without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, so long as departure is not made beyond the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 -is a front face View of the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a rear view.
Figure 4 is an exploded perspective view.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary View showing the slots in the back of the holder.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing, the reference characters A and B indicate similarly formed front and back members, respective- 1y, composed preferably, of plastic material, either transparent or opaque, but as shown the front member A is composed of transparent material while the back member is composed of opaque material.
The front member is illustrated as of disk form l provided with a peripheralflange 2, forming a cup-shaped front member. The back member includes a disk portion 3 and a peripheral flange 4, forming a cup-shaped member. These two similarly formed front and back members are adapted to telescope with each other with their flanges overlapping and when in overlapping relation sealed together either by tight fit or by any suitable means, forming an inner recess or pocket C.
The pocket` C; receives; a. picture. mat or' mask 5 of 'disk formation and: of: thinpaper orthe likeY and liesagainst the inner' face ofthe'. transparent front member A and has therein. an opening 6? off any suitable configuration for the displaytherethrough and; throughf.` the transparent! front member cfa; portrait on cthengurer or emblem;v
symbol orl the: like: carried; on4 a thin; disk?` ele" ment l,
Af relatively' thick: or stiffsolid' disk 8 lies in'.
the recess or pocket C behind the thin disk element 'I therebetween and a metal disk 9 lying flush against the inner face of the back member B, to maintain the thin disk 'I and the mat or mask 5 together with the mat or mask flush against the inner face of the front transparent member A.
The article thus far described might Well be used as a pocket piece, butin order that the article may be securely fastened to a garment, I attach to the back member B and to the aforesaid internal metal plate 9 a common safety pin D. For instance, before the front and rear members A and B are sealed together to enclose the mat or mask 5, disks 'I, 8 and 9, I provide the disk portion 3 of the back member B with oppositely disposed, alining short and long slots I0 and II, respectively, which are adapted to register with corresponding short and long slots I2 and I3, formed in the aforesaid metal disk 9, in Which I mount or anchor the safety pin D.
To accomplish the mounting of the safety pin D on the article, the pointed end I 4 of the bill I5 of the pin is inserted outwardly through the registering short slots of the back member and metal disk, carrying the coil I6 of the Safety pin into the registering short slots and locating the guard I'I of the safety pin in the registering longer slots when the pointed end Ill of the bill I5 may be received by the guard Il of the pin With the back element I8 of the pin located adjacent the inner face of the metal disk 9, therebetween and the relatively stiff paste board or other disk 8. The front and back members A- and B may then be sealed together and the pointed end of the safety pin inserted in or removed from the guard II at will to secure the button to a garment or release it from attachment thereto. Y
The metal disk 9 reinforces the back member B and it may be secured thereto or lie loose therein so long as the slots thereof may register with the similarly formed slots in the back member for the mounting of the safety pin. The slots of the metal disk and the back member of the rear member of the casing, which disk portion is flat throughout its entire area so that the plastic casing is reinforced where the safety pin is attached. The safety pin is straight and the straight intermediate portion I8 of vthe safety pin iits directly against the front flat face of the metal disk 9. The tting of the straight intermediate portion metal disk and the arrangement of the end portions of the safety pin in the slots of the metal disk and the plastic rear member of the casing enables the safety pin to be used Without liability of breaking or otherwise injuring the plastic material of the casing.
What is Aclaimed is:
A holder of the character described Icomprising a; casing including a transparent front frame member having a disk portion and a peripheral flangeV and a back frame member including a. disk portion at throughout its entire I8 directly against the f area and having a peripheral flange, said frame members being of plastic material connected together at their anges, a, disk shaped mask located within the casing and disposed against the rear face of thedisk portion of the front frame member and having an opening, a thin disk element for displaying a portrait or other matter confinedwithin the casingback of the mask and viewable through the transparent frame member and through the opening in the mask, a solid disk tted against said disk element, a relatively Vstiff metal disk at throughout its entire area and disposed within the casing adjacent the in- A ner face of the disk shaped portion of said back frame member to reinforce the latter, the disk Vportion of Vsaid back frame member and said metal diskbeing slotted to form spaced aligning openings therein, and a straight safety pin having its end portions disposed in the spaced openings of the disk portion of the back frame member and the slotted metal disk with a straight intermediate portion located between the ends of said pin and disposed against the flat front face of said slotted metal disk and the rear face of said solid disk, whereby to anchor the safety pin to the holder and to maintain the metal disk close to the inner face of the back memberand thereby reinforce the latter.
