SHELL AND COVERING THEREFOR FOR BADGES, BUTTONS, MIRRORS, &c.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,744, dated April 19, 1904.

Be it known that I, VILLIAi-i HORNICH, J r. a citizen of the United States, and 'a resident of Rochester, in the county of Nlonroe and State of New York,have invented an Improved Shell and Covering Therefor for Badges, Buttons, Lfirrors, &c., of which the following is a specification.

Heretofore in the manufacture of shells for buttons, badges, mirrors, &c., having a covering piece or cap stretched over and secured upon a metal base such covering has usually been secured to the base or shell by means of a third piece so formed as to engage both the covering and the shell and securely hold them together.

The essential feature of my present invention consists in providing a cover and a base or shell so made, preferably of thin .sheet metal, that the cover may be placed or stretched over the base or shell and securely attached thereto without the use of a third member. When the shell is of suitably-ornamental material or has a suitable finish, a cover may be dispensed with, and in such case the rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange constitutes a means for reinforcing the inner edge of the contracted portion of the shell on the rear side, while at the same time the inwardly-extending nature of the flange conceals from view behind the face side of the button the outer or free edge of this reinforcing and doubled portion.

The accompanying drawings show a shell and covering secured thereto in accordance 'ith my invention, such as may be used for a ge or button.

In Fig. 1. (t represents, on an enlarged scale, the base or shell as it is stamped and punched out of suitable material, such as thin sheet brass, steel, or iron. The general form of the shell is convex at its top and with a rim 0' preferably, though not necessarily, bent inwardly. This rim (0' has formed thereon and at right angles therewith a flat flange c, all as shown in Fig. 1. Over the base or shell is stretched the preferably tightly-fitting cap or cover 6 in such a way that the margin of such cover or cap is turned over and around the rim (1 as shown in Fig. 2, and then-the fiat flange 0 of the shell a is turned and bent over so as to firmly press against the margin of the covering Z), which is then securely clamped between the bent flange c and the rim a of the base or shell (0, as it appears in Fig. 3, While at the same time when desired the rim and flange are together pressed into the rear of the open shell, so as to form an inwardly-curved peripheral flange.

It will be readily understood, of course, that the general conformation of the shell will be modified to suit the particular purpose for which the shell is designed, and the character, conformation, and extent of the inwardlycurved peripheral flange will be modified to suit the purpose for which the article is made and the connection which is to be effected be- Correction in Letters Patent No. 757,744.

tween the shell with its cover and the article with which they are to be used. These various modifications in the conformation of the shell and the inwardly curved peripheral flange to suit different purposes may all be made without departingfrom the spirit of my invention, which contemplates, broadly, the method herein shown for securing the cover upon the shell and also the formation on such shell and integral therewith of the inwardly-' curved peripheral flange having the fold at its rear and inner edge, as indicated.

When the shell is of suitable finish or of suitably-ornamental material, the cover may be dispensed with and the double portion of the rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange bent down upon itself to form a reinforcing or strengthening to the edge of the inwardly and rearwardly extending flange and with the free or outer edge of this double portion concealed behind the face of the button or badge. Such a strengthening or reinforcing of the inner edge of the flange results in avoiding the necessity for the introduction of the usual ring or collet for this purpose, and the button or badge when made in accordance with my invention is struck out from a single piece.

What I claim is- '1. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and integral therewith a rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer.

2. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and [sun] integral therewith a rearward] y and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer, the rear edge of such flange also reducing the opening on the rear side of such shell.

3. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and integral therewith a rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer and a cover or cap stretched over such shell and with its free edges clamped between the layers of such flange.

4. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and integral therewith a rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between -them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer, the rear edge of such flange also reducing the opening on the rear side of such shell, and a cover or cap stretched over such shell and with its free edges clamped between the layers of such flange.

Y., as owner of the entire interest in said invention, as shown by the assignments of record in this oflice; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.

These various modifications in the conformation of the shell and the inwardly curved peripheral flange to suit different purposes may all be made without departingfrom the spirit of my invention, which contemplates, broadly, the method herein shown for securing the cover upon the shell and also the formation on such shell and integral therewith of the inwardly-' curved peripheral flange having the fold at its rear and inner edge, as indicated.

What I claim is- '1. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and integral therewith a rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer.

2. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and [sun] integral therewith a rearward] y and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer, the rear edge of such flange also reducing the opening on the rear side of such shell.

3. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and integral therewith a rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer and a cover or cap stretched over such shell and with its free edges clamped between the layers of such flange.

4. As an article of manufacture for the purposes described, a shell having thereon and integral therewith a rearwardly and inwardly extending peripheral flange formed in two layers with a fold between -them at the inner and rear edge of such flange and with the outer layer formed by the free edge of the metal comprising such shell bent outwardly and forwardly down upon such inner layer, the rear edge of such flange also reducing the opening on the rear side of such shell, and a cover or cap stretched over such shell and with its free edges clamped between the layers of such flange.
