Description
Sept. 1, 1931-. P. E. FENTON ORNAMENT AND ATTACHMENT THEREFOR Filed May 31, 1930 Patented Sept. 1, 1931 warren STATES PATENT OFFICE PAUL E. FEN'ION, or THOMASTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNQRITO sCovI'LL ANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, or WATERBUBY, CO NECTICUT, A CORPORATION or CONNECTIC T-- ORNAMENT Ann ATTACHMENT THEREFOR Application filed May 31, 1930, Serial No. 458,854..
This invention relates to an ornament for use primarily upon various'ar ticles'of apparel, such, for example, as arctics, shoes,
, pocket-books or purses, hand-bags and also upon other articles which employ snap and other separable fasteners, particularly when such fasteners occupy conspicuous.positions upon the articles. p In articles of apparel and the like provid ed with separable fasteners, it is at present customary to make the portions of such fasteners, which are conspicuously located, of the same colors as the articles, or of such colors as will artistically harmonize or contrast with the colors of the articles.
It has been found that the artistic and attractive effect of this coloring may be materially enhanced and set off by the addition of a bright or contrastingly colored ornament, such as a polished, plated, coated or otherwisetreated member of metal or other suitable material and of any desired ornamental configuration and surface ornamentation, preferably interposed between the colored fastener part and the portion of the article upon which the fastener part is ar ranged. U
The object of the invention is to provide an ornament of the kind referred to, which will be of neat, attractive and artistic appearance, simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and'capable of production in large quantities at low manufacturing cost, and which, moreover, may be applied or attached to an article simultaneously with and by an element of a separable or other fas tener. V r
The invention comprises an ornament in the form of a flat or depressed plate of any 40 desired configuration and ornamental finish;
this plate being so formed as to be readily at- 1 tached to anarticle, preferably by means of a member of a separable fastener or button, and a portion of such element being exposed upon the outer surface of the ornament and preferably colored the same as or .in Contrast with the color of the article, as will be hereinafter more fully explained and finally claimed.
1 In the accompanying drawings illustrat ing the invention, inthe several figures of which like I parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 isja side elevation of an arctic or zipper, the closure strap of which is provided with the ornament of this'invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating thev application of the ornament of, the invention to a-hand-bag, purse or pocket-book. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of an ornament plate embodying the features of the invention, and Fig. 4 is a half sectionand side view thereof. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the ornament attached toan article by means of an element of a separable fastener, and Fig. 6 is a sectional side View thereof. Fig. 7 is a sectional side view of'a suitable stud member for cooperation with the socket member of the separable fastener of Fig.
6. Figs. 8 and 9 are a plan View and a sectional side view, respectively, of a modified form of the ornament plate of the invention. In its preferred form, as shown in Figs.
1 to 6 inclusive, the ornament of the inven-,
tion includes a plate 1, preferably of metal, polished, plated, coated or otherwise treated to enhance its attractiveness and ornamental character, and of any desired ornamental and artistic configuration, and it may alsobe etched, engraved, embossed or otherwise ornamented upon its exposed surface. This plate is'recessed or depressed, as indicated at 2, and is provided with an appropriately located aperture 8, for a purpose later explained. c
The'ornament may be applied or afiixed to anarticle by any desired attaching means, but,.in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, it is preferably attached by, and
forms a combination with, an element or part of a separable or snap fastener. shown in Figs. 5,- 6 and 7., this element is the resilient socket" member ofya snap fastener of substantially the type disclosed in mycopending application Serial N o. 436,210,;filied March 15, 1930. This fastener element comprises a finish cap or shell 4oforming .a head which may be coated or otherwise treated togive it a distinctive color, and it may alsov be given other surface ornamentation if de sired; The flange .5 of this shell or cap is As I closed in around the off standing lip 6 of the resilient socket piece 7 which is formed for snap action over the head 8 of a complemental rigid stud. V
The depression or recess 2 of the ornament plate 1 is of a size and depth to re ceive the head formed by the shell orcap 4 of the fastener element to such an extent.
that the projecting portion thereof will provide a neat and attractive button'or dome-v like projection relativelyto'theexposed surface of the plate 1 and when-these two parts are thus arranged the socket piece 7 wi l project through the aperture 3 of the plate 1.
The ornament, which preferably includes the ornament p.ate 1 and the outwardly visible portion of the head formed by the cap or shell 4, is attached to arr-article, such as the strap 9 of an arctic 10 (Figs. 1, 5 and 6) by providing an opening 11in the article and passing the socket piece 7 through such opening and then setting the parts upon the article by clinching the barrel 12 of an eye- 7 let betweenthe flange 5 of the shell 4 and .plate'.
the offstanding lip 6 of the socket piece 7, as indicated at 13. The plate 1 is thus interposed between the article and the shell 4 of the fastener and is rigidly attached to the article in adjusted position, and the dcpressed portionQ causes it to stand oil or away from the article, thus not only enhancing its attractiveness but making 1t easy to grasp when it is located in a pos1tion which ;makes this desirable.
As shown in Fig. 5, the article isof a blue color, and the shell or cap l presents a head which is also blue to match the article. In contrast with the blue color of these parts the ornament plate l may be nickel-plated 'O1' otherwise made of a contrasting brightness or color. The combination and coloring of the parts in this manner provides a striking and attractive ornamentation; l
\ As hereinbefore indicated, the shell or cap 4 may be colored to produce a head in contrast with the color of the article, or it may belpolished or plated. I l may be colored, the main objectbeing the provision of an ornamental and attractive contrast or blend or combination ef'col'ors;
or the article and the ornament, including the parts 1 and may be of the same'color.
If" desired, the depression or recess 2 may beomitted-and the ornament plate made he providedwith an aperture 3 In'such case the plate will lie fiat against the article and the ornamental cap or shell of the attachi'ng element will stand away from the Nomatter which form of ornament plate is used, it will be apparent that the object of'theinvention will be served. Either type of; ornament plate-2 is easily and cheaply manufactured, andeither'type can'be'readily.
Similarly, the plate the article.
