A. COTLER PENDANT WATCHCASE Filed Dec;: 23, 1922 Patented Aug. 18, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PENDANT WATCI-IGASE.
Application filed December 23, 1922. Serial No. 608,786.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM COTLER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented a certain Pendant VVatchcase, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pendant watch cases and especially to the class in which the dial side of the case has a face of any con- Ventional form and the reverse side an ornamental reinforcement upon its upper edge and the upper portions of the side edges, while the case is suspended at two points upon the upper edge, the whole forming a pendant and conveying the impression of a miniature hand bag or similar article.
The main object of th invention is to introduce a novel form of utility into the class of pendant ornaments worn about the neck after the fashion of a lavalliere.
Further objects and the particular advantages attained by my invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this application,
Fig. 1 is a view of a pendant watch case made according to my invention.
Fig. 2 is a reverse View of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view of another form of watch case including the features of my invention.
Fig. 4: is a reverse view of th same.
Fig. 5 is a side view of Fig. 1 with the rear cover opened and in section to disclose the reinforced construction.
Fig. 6 is another modification of a watch embodying my invention.
Fig. 7 is a reverse view of the same.
Fig. 8 is a sid View of Fig. 3 with both front crystal frame and rear cover partly opened.
Fig. 9 is a side view of Fig. 6.
Throughout the views, the same reference numerals denote the same or corresponding parts.
I11 the field of pendant ornaments, it is customary to have mounted jewels and variously ornamented lavallieres, lockets and the like, but it is herein proposed to add to this class an article of novelty as well as utility which allows of many modifications and a great range of ornamental designs.
In the practice of my invention, a watch 1 is furnished with the usual dial 2, and with a winding stem 3. As the watch is to be used as a pendant ornament, the upper portion has a pair of eyes 8, 8 to which are secured a pair of chains 9, 9 joined at the top by a common ring 10. If we neglect the dial and the stem, the general appearance is that of a plain though very small hand bag, the surface being preferably ornamented in any desired manner. On the rear cover 6, an upper reinforcement 7 is located, being a strengthening means as well as a means for simulating a mesh bag frame in construction and appearance. The front and rear covers 1 and 6, respectively, are hinged at 4: and 5 to the main body 15 of the case, the front cover or frame 1 has the usual crystal 16 to protect the dial.
Another form is shown in Fig. 3, where the general outline of the case is a little more ornate, the reinforcement here taking the form of frame 14 on the rear cover, 13. The crystal cover or frame 11 and the rear cover are hinged to the case body 20 as in the former case.
A third form which my invention may take is shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 9, in which the crystal frame 17 and the rear cover 18 are hinged at A and 5 to a case 21, the rear cover here having a slightly different form of reinforcement 19.
It may be noted that in each of the different forms of my invention, the back cover on a watch case is formed with a reinforcement of the whole upper edge, and in some possible construction it is also evident that the reinforcement may even occupy the upper portions of the side edges.
It is to be noted that in all the views a purse lock or clasp 12 is shown. This need not be actually useful in construction but merely be attached to heighten the resemblance between a watch case and hand bag.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim,
1. A pendant watch case comprising a case having a dial and upon its upper edge a suspension means, a crystal cover hinged to the case to cover said dial and a rear cover hinged to said case provided at the upper edge with a reinforced and raised portion.
2. A pendant watch case having a crystal frame upon on side, a cover on the reverse side. provided with a raised reinforcement upon the upper edge thereof, and a purse lock upon the upper edge of said case.
3. A pendant watch case having upon one side a dial, a crystal frame to cover said 4. A watch case having upon one side a dial and a cover therefor, a cover upon the reverse side, a rehei' reinforcement upon the upper edge of said reverse cover, a purse look upon the upper portion of said case, and a Winding stein pro ect1ng from one edgeof: said case.
5. A Watch case comprising an open facecover having a crystal, a corresponding opposite cover provided upon its upper edge with a reinforcement and a purse lock and a winding stein upon the upper edge of said case.
6. A Watch ease comprising a dial side and a revers side, a structure upon the upper portion of one of said sides to resemble a handbag flap, and a Winding stein upon said case.
Signed at 4401 13th Ave, in thehorough of Brooklyn, county ofIQingsmity. and: State of New York, this 21 day of December, 19-22.
ABRAHAM COTLER.
