Description

POCKETBOOK Filed Jan. 29. 1926 ALBERT H. SHXLLMAN Patented Apr. 19, 1927.
"pairs: STATES ALBERT H. SHILLMAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Q K TBQQK- Application filed January 29, .1826. Serialflo. 8 4,536.
This invention relates to pocketbooks, purses and the likeand more particularly toa method whereby such articles may be easily and convenientlydecoratedfby hand.
It has been the usualpractice in the man .ufacture of ladies handbags, pocketbooks and purses to decorate such, articles by methods involving, the use of machinery. Individuality of design was thus necessarily reduced to aminimum aswere theartistic ,efifects so created demanded by thecustomer. Further, those whopurchase such articlesdesired to provifdetheir own decorations thereon. Until now, however, this has not been possible by reason of the fact that .no means have ever been developed which provided for-the sale .ofand dispositionot pocketbooks .and thelike which, while substantially complete as such, were yet adapted, for individual decoration.
The principalobjectot this invention, accordingly is the provision .of such aconstruction in pocketbooks orpurses which, while substantially complete as such, yet nevertheless are adapted, for individual .haIlCl decoration.
Afurther object ofthis inventionis the provision of. a construction in pocketbooks and the like which is, atonce asreaclily-adapted for the application of various decorative designs as it is simple and inexpensive to produce.
A further ob ect of this invention is the provision of an auxiliary cover or flap for the pocketbook, which cover or flap is secured permanently along one edge thereof to the pocketbook thus providing a means on which the individual decorative design may be carried out without the necessity for disturbing the pocketbook itself.
A still further object of this invention relates to the method of arranging the several elements of the pocketbook such that the latter is provided with a means which is readily adapted to any kind of individual decoration.
Various other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the combination, location and relative arrangement of parts all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown in the accompanying drawings and final paiuted out iu'the appended claims..
, pocketbookit was .o ttenthe case that the 4 construction shown in wise impressed Referring to the accompanying draw- 1ngs:
Fig.1 is a view in perspective-showing a having an auxiliary flap arranged thereon this flap being shown partly decorated.
Fig. 2' is an end view ofthe upper portion of the pocketbookshowing the particular manner of Securing. he in 19951- tion Fig. 3 ,isa-view in cross section showing the manner of securing the tree edge @131 the auxiliary flap to thiepockethook.
F iwis an ,cnd'yiew. of'a modified'torm of the. invention.
Fig. 5 is aview ,incross section showing ,the manner of joining. together tl16- free edges of the modified form of pocketbook shown in Fig.4. i
The same part is designatedby the same referencev numeral wherever itoccurs throughout the several views.
In the drawings, both in Figures land 2, 10 designates generally thepocketloook to which the ,invention has been applied. Fig.1 the pocketbook 10is of the ,usualconstruction both id n out x ep tor the ra tha th side 11. thereof is covered by van auxiliary flap or cover 12. This flap, or cover secured to the pocketbook alongth e upper edgethereoflpreterably by means ofa row otstitching 13. As is most clearly shown in Figure 2 this stitching 13 is concealed beneath the hand strap 14; of the pocketbook.
The sides of the pocketbook 10 are provided with no decoration, the cover being of plain cloth or other material. It is for the decorative design on the front of the pocketbook that the auxiliary flap 12 is provided. The outline of this decorative design 15 "for the purse is drawn or otheron the auxiliary flap 12. In view of the fact that this flap is only secured along its upper edge its main body is free to be handled for the purpose of working the decorative design 15, this being accomplished by the usual expedients of embroidering, painting orthe sewing of various colored or steel beads or the like this last expedient of heading being the one that is preferable and favor at this-time. lieu completely worked out or The design w I filled in t the form indicated by the reference numeral 16 in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
Upon the completion of the decorative design. as when all the beads are sewed in place, the side and bottom edges of the flap 12 have their free edges inturned as at 17 whereupon these inturned edges are secured, as by stitching, to the side and bottom edges of the pocketbook in. the manner indicated by 18 in Figure 3.
In the modification shown in Fig. at instead of providing a substantia ly complete pocketbook or purse having an auxiliary flap for decorative purposes, the covering material. 19 on one or both sides of the pock etbook is freely disposed along its side and bottom edges with respect to the base 20 of the pocketbook proper. This base is preferably made up of an interior lining 21 to which is secured in any suitable manner, preferably by pasting, a cardboard or sim ilar backing 22. The side and bottom edges of both the interior lining 21 and X- terior covering material 19 are respectively turned over as indicated at 23 and 24 and adapted to be joined together when the decorative design is completed. also preferably by pasting, as indicated in Figure 5.
In a manner similar to that described in connection with the construction shown in Figure 1, and before the cover 19 is pasted in place. an outline of the decorative design is initially developed on the exterior cover 19 of the pocketbook which design is subsequently worked out in any suitable manner.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided by means of this invention a construction of pocketbook by which one is enabled to effect any desired design on a pocketbook, purse or other similar article suitable to ones own taste. Not only this but the invention makes possible the distriis intended that the appended claims be construed broadly to cover these various modifications.
lVhat is claimed as new and useful is:
1. An article of the class described comprising a pocketbook substantially complete in itself, in combination with an auxiliary cover pern'ianent-ly attached to the top of said pocketbook, the main body of said cover being free of said pocketbook and of an erea substantially equal to that of the side of the pocketbook, and means for attaching the sides and bottom of said cover to the pocketbook upon the working out of a predetermined decorative design thereon.
2. An article of the class described com prising a pocketbook in combination with an auxiliary cover permanently attached to the top of said pocketbook, the main body of said cover being free of said pocketbook and of an area substantially equal to that of the side of the pocketbook. and means for attaching the sides and bottom of said cover to the pocketbook upon the working out of a predetermined decorative design thereon.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto atiix my signature.
ALBERT H. SHILLMAN.
