PlPE-HANGE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,765, dated July 2, 1901. Application flied iui 16,1900. strain. 23,817. at. model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. House, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Hangers, of which the following is a full,- clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to pipe-hangers and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described,- and claimed.
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the device in a position to' be applied for use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the relative position of the parts when the device is in actual use.
In the construction of my improved pipehanger I provide a U-shaped casting 1, the ends of which terminate in horizontal projections 2, there being an aperture 3 through each of said projections, which are for the purpose of receiving bolts or screws for securing the device to a suitable support.
4 indicates a casting which is for the purpose of resting above the pipe, to be carried between the said pipe and the support to which the hanger is secured. Formed in the under side of the casting 4 is a circular notch 5, which is adapted to receive the upper side of the pipe in the manner shown in Fig. 2.
6 indicates a tooth integral with the upper side of the casting 4, the purpose of which is to engage in the support to which the hanger is attached. Integral with each end of the casting 4 are cars 7, the purpose of which are to engage against the sides of the casting 1, thereby preventing the casting 4 from being displaced from the desired position. As shown, the casting4 is of such thickness that when the pipe is applied in the hanger the projections 2 will be at a slight remove from the under surface of the support to which the device is attached. "This is for the purpose of causing the pipe to be firmly gripped by the casting when the bolts or screws are applied through the apertures 3 in the manner described.
As shown in Fig. 2, the tooth 6 is of such length that it holds the casting 4 out of direct contact with the under surface of the support, thereby forming a pivot which will allow the pipe to be turned a slight distance even after it has been tightly clamped in po-' sition. For various reasons it is often desirable to turn the pipe after application, and by this construction a pivot is formed which will allow this operation. The circular under side 5 of the casting 4 is concentric with the lower portion of the casting 1, thereby forming a close-fitting clamp for the pipe which is to be supported. In the construction of thecasting 4 the ears 7 are arranged in such manner that they will engage over the projection 2 Without the necessity of being polished or finished, thereby saving time and expense.
I claim 7 1. A pipe-hanger, consisting of a U-shaped supporting-casting adapted to receive and support a pipe, and provided on each end with an aperture for the reception of fastening means, a plate carried Within said U- shaped casting, the said plate having integral projections which operate against the ends of the U-shaped member to retain the said plate in position, one side of said plate being adapted to rest upon the pipe and the other side being provided with a projection which is substantially parallel with the sides of the member, substantially as specified.
2. In a pipe-hanger the combination of a substantially U-shaped member adapted to receive a pipe to be supported and provided on each end with an aperture for the reception of fastening means, with a second member having its sides fitting within the limbs of the U -shaped member without substantial play, one face of said member being adapted to rest against the pipe and the other provided with a projection which is substantially parallel with the sides of the member.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY w. HOERR.
