PACKAGE FOR CIGARS.

(No Model.)
nms PLTERS 00., PNOTO-LI TNO., WASHINGTON n c UNITED STATES LP NT E;
CHARLES J OHANN, OF- NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE HAVANA-AMERICAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PACKAGE FOR CIGARS.
SPECIEIGATION arm n part of Letters Patent No. 676,136, dated June 11, 1901. Application filed April 2, 1901. serial No. 54,06. (Ne model.)
Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packages for Cigars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to packages for cigars, and has for its object to provide a novel, cheap, and simple binder or wrapper by means of which two or more cigars may be neatly, compactly, and securely bound together in a single package that is convenient to carry in the pocket and which may be sold for a fixed or determinate sum of money and which will render it impossible to abstract one of the cigars from the package without breaking or destroying the binder or wrapper.
It also has for its object to protect the ends of the cigars.
To these ends my invention consists in the novel package and the blank for making the same hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims following the description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forminga part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the complete package. Fig. 2 is asimilar view of the binder or wrapper, the cigars not being shown; and Fig. 3 is a View of the blank from which the binder or wrapperis made.
In the drawings I have shown the package as consisting of two cigars securely bound together in neat, convenient, and compact form by my improved binder 0r package-wrapper, and this is the preferred form in which the packages are put upon the market; but it will be understood that more than two cigars may be placed in each package, the binder or package-wrapper being made of a size to inclose or bind together the number of cigars which it is designed the package shall consist of.
Referringto Fig. 1 of the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates two cigars assembled side by side and close together. Fitted over the outer or open ends of the cigars is a cap 2, which closely encircles the outer end portions of the cigars and covers and protects their open or cut ends. Over the opposite ends of the cigars is fitted a frusto-conical sleeve 3,
that closely encircles the tip ends of the cigars and securely binds them together at this point. The capZ and sleeve 3 are connected together by a strip or band 4, whereby when the package is completed neither of the cigars can be abstracted without destroying or breaking the binder or package-wrapper.
The binder or package-wrapper may be made of paper or other suitable material and is constructed and applied as follows: From a sheet of suitable material is first cut a blank comprising the strip or band 4, from one end of which extend laterally in opposite directions two segmental or arc-shaped wings or fiapsfi and 6, the wing or flap 5 being considerably'longer than the wing or fiap 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Formed integrally with the flaps 5 and (5 is a wing or fiap 7, extending from the outer side or edge of the flaps 5 and 6 at substantially a right angle or in alinement with the strip or band 4. Adapted to be attached transversely to the free end of the strip or band 4 is a segmental or arc-shaped strap 8, said stripor band being secured nearer to one end of the strap than the other. The strap 8 is curved in the reverse direction to the flaps 5 and 6 and may be conveniently attached to the strip or band 4 by paste or other adhesive or by any preferred or suitable means, or the strap may be made integral with the other portions of the blank; but by making it separately and pasting it to the strip or band, as
shown, an economy in material is efiected and the blank is easier to cut out.
In forming or making up the package the cigars are placed closely side by side and laid upon the strip or band 4, the open or trimmed ends of the cigars being disposed in line with the inner edge of 1 the end flap '7." The short flap 6 is then folded or bentuplaround one of the cigars, the end flap 7 isnext folded up against the open or trimmed ends of the cigars and over upon the previously-folded flap 6, and the flap 5 is thenwrapped around the ends of the cigars and over the flaps 6 and 7 and is pasted thereto. The longer end of the flap 8 is next wrapped around the tip or pointed ends of the cigars and lapped over the shorter end, to which it is pasted, thus completing the package. After the package has been made up in the manner described it will be impossible to removeone of the cigars without breaking, tearing, or destroying the wrapper or binder, as the end flap '7, which passes over the open or trimmed ends of the cigars, prevents the binder or wrapper from.
being Withdrawn over the cigars in the direction of the tips or pointed end of the latter,
and the frusto-conical sleeve 3, which encircles the pointed ends of the cigars, is ob- Viously too small to be slipped over the cigars whensecured in place about the cigars neatly and compactly binds the latter together in compact form most convenient to carry in the pocket, and when the cigars are sold fora fixed price-as, for eXample,-two for five centsprevents dishonest retailers from selling the cigars separately at an advanced price.
The hinder or wrapper may have readily pri-ntedthereon the name of the brand of the cigars and the manufactu rers name.
Having described my invention, What I claim is= I 1. A package-Wrapper for cigars com-pris ing a tubular cap closed at its end for inc1os ing the open or trimmed ends of a plurality of cigars, a-conical sleeve for encircling the pointed ends of the cigars, and a strip or band uniting said cap and sleeve, substantiallyas described.
2. A blank for making cigar-package wrappers or binders comprising a strip or band provided at one end with two wings or flaps projecting laterally in opposite directions and an end flap projecting approximately at a right angle to said lateral flaps, and a trans verse strap on the opposite end of the strip or band, substantially as described. I
3. A blank for making cigar-package wrap- :pers or binders, comprising a strip or band provided at one end with two outwardlycurved wings or flaps of unequal length and projecting laterally from the strip or band in opposite directions, and a straight end flap projecting approximately at a right angle to said lateral flaps, and a transverse strap on the opposite end of the strip or band, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
