UNITED 'i STATES' PATENT QFFICE.
CHARLESHERNSHEIM, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CIGAR-BAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,687, dated October 16, 1894.
Application tiled December 20, 1 893. Serial No. 494,143. (N0 mOdeL) v To a/ZZ whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, CHARLES HERNsHnIM, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of 5 Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to I o which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a paper or other ring or band for use on cigars and other articles, on which ring the name or brand is commonly marked.
The object of the invention is to devise a band whichcan be readily removed from the cigar Without injury to the wrapper thereon or which can be applied to other articles requiring a tightly-Wrapped and easily removzo able band.
Heretofore the removal of such bands has been commonly attended with more or less abrasion of the material of the cigar wrapper, because the bands were cut in such a manner and so made of material of uniform strength throughout that the smoker could only with difficulty tear the band from the cigar and in so tearing usually damaged the wrapper to such an extent as to impair the value of the 3o cigar.
My invention therefore consists of a ring or band having' a projecting lip or flap adapted to be laid hold of, by the hand of the smoker, and said ring bein g also weakened in strength along certain lines in order that it may be more easily torn, and the invention also consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described andvclaimed.
In the annexed drawings illustrating my invention: Figure l is a perspective view of a cigar provided with myimproved band located in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the band. Fig. '3 is a plan View of the .strip out of which the band is formed and before it is folded into ring shape.
Similar letters of reference designate 'corresponding parts in the several gures.
A denotes a strip of paper or similar mate- 5o rial which is folded into a ring to form the cigar or other band. In the ordinary form of band, the strip is usually cut with its edges tear the band asunder and so remove it from the cigar. `When the band is tightly xed upon the cigar closely encircling the same, this liap will lie close against the side of the cigar, but it can easily be laid hold of without damaging the cigar wrapper. In order however to lay hold of the edge of the ordinary band which is unprovided with the flap, it generally happens that the wrapper is indented or broken and the cigar consequently damaged. This bad result of removing the ring does not follow when it has the iap B. Furthermore, my invention includes the idea of weakening the material of the band A at certain points, preferably along transverse lines in order that it may tear more easily. This I generally'accomplished by providing the band A with a couple of parallel transverse rows of perforations a, a, or scored lines along which the band will easily tear when the smoker lays hold ofthe flap B for the purpose of severing and removing the band -from the cigar said flap being at the end of and a part of the portion between the scored lines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cigar or other band which is weakened at certain points by scored lines so thattit may be more easily removed, the intervening l portions between the scored lines having at the end a loosely projecting flap adapted to be grasped to tear the band. j
2. A cigar or other band having parallel scored or weakened lines, the intervening portion between which projects at the ends beyond the edges of the band to provide a loose iiap to be grasped to tear the band, substantially as described. j
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES HERNSHEIM.
