Description

TOBACCO PIPE. (Application filed Apr. 23, 1901.}
(No Model.)
'UNITED STATES-'7 PATENT OFFICE.
v HENRY W. COMSTOGK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 675,768, dated June 4, 1901.
Application filed April 23 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. COMSTOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tobacco-pipes; and its object is to prevent the distillation of nicotine and other deleterious oils, due, within the bowl of the pipe by, burning the tobacco from the bottom upward instead of from the top of the pipe downward.
The invention is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved tobacco-pipe. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of Fig. 1, showing the cover swung to one side of the bowl to permit the latter to be charged or cleaned; Fig. 3 represents a central longitudinal section of the pipe, showing it in the position in which it is intended to be used; and Fig. 4 represents a detail plan View of the bowl-cover.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wher ever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the pi pebowl, having an internal cavity 0., adapted to hold the tobacco.
B is the stem, leading from the lower end of the bowl and provided with a longitudinal perforation b, that is in communication with the bowl-cavity a ;by.-means of a conduit 0 in the bowl portion A, as shown in Fig. 3. The said channel or conduit 0 is arranged parallel, or nearly so, to the bowlcavity a, as shown in said Fig. 3.
D is a cover pivotally arranged upon a screw E, that is screwed through the stem B about opposite to the perforation O, and said screw serves to,cover the perforation in the stem, through which the drill is passed in drilling the channel 0. In practice I make the outer end of said screw E in the form of a suitably-shaped knob or finger-piece e, adapted to be held by the smoker while smoking.
To the under side of the cover D are se- Serial No. 57,067. (No model.)
cured a series of pins 01 d 02, adapted to rest against the open end of the bowl in such a manner as to leave a space F between the open end of the bowl and cover, so as to allow the air to enter the bowl during the smoking operation, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4.
In charging or cleaning the bowl the cover D may be swung to the position shown in Fig. 2.
In pipes of ordinary construction, in which the mouth of the bowl is held upward, the
tents, of the pipe as when the pipe is first lighted.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is A. base-burning tobacco-pipe, consisting of a hollow bowl A, having a perforated stem B, communicating with the bowl at or near its open end, and having a conduit 0, con- -necting the stem and closed portion of the bowl, a cover D, pivotally connected to a pin or screw E, c, said cover having attached to its inner side a series of pins or projections d, d, d, for the purpose of holding said cover from contact with the bowl so as to permit the air to pass through the space F, between the bowl and cover substantially as herein described and shown, all being for the purpose of preventing the distillation of nicotine and other deleterious oils within the bowl of the pipe.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY W. COMSTOCK.
