UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HENRY MOURRY, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
DOOR SPRING AND STOP.
SPECIFICATION forming* part Of Let'el Patent NO. 675,286, dated May 28, 1901.
Application filed October 30, 1900. ASerial No. 34,939. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MCCURRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ot' Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Door Spring and Stop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to improvements in connection with closingsprings of stop devices for swinging doors of carriages to prevent the doors from swinging too far out, so as to strike against the carriage-wheels, and the object is to provide a device for this purpose that shall be simple in its construction, not liable to break or get out of order, and that may be readily applied..
I will describe a door spring and stop embodying my invention and 'then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an internal elevation of a portion of a carriage, showing a spring and stop embodying my invention as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the line .fr of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2, but showing the door open.
The spring and stop comprise a flexible metal strip l, attached at its outer end to the door-pillar 2. As here shown, a metal plate 3 is attached to the door-pillar, and the end of the strip l is secured thereto by means of a screw 4. This screw may be inserted through an opening 5 in the trimming of the door. I have shown the portion of the trimming in which the hole 5 is formed as consisting of a removable piece; but this is not necessary to my invention. The strap 1 is movable through an opening 6 formed in the standing hinge-pillar '7, and to the inner end of this strap one end of a spring 8 is attached, the other end of said spring being attached to the corner-pillar 9. The spring is attached to the strap by means of a loop l0, which is sufficiently large to prevent its passing through the openin-g 6.
In operation when the door is opened the strap l will be drawn outward until the ring 10 engages against the inner side of the hingepillar 7. This will effectually prevent the door from moving too far backward to engage with a wheel of the carriage. Upon closing the door the strap will be drawn inward by the spring 8.
By this construction the device is entirely hidden from view when the door is closed. A portion of the strap, however, shows when the door is open, as indicated in Fig. 3. As the strap is made of metal, it is obvious that it cannot be easily broken or worn away, as is the case with ordinary stop-straps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent* A door spring and stop, comprising a iiexible strap secured at its outer end to the door and movable through an opening in the standing hinge-pillar of the door and having a loop` on the inner end adapted to engage the inner surface of said pillar to limit the outward swinging. 01": the door, and a closing-spring connected at one end to the said loop and at the other end to a fixed support, substantially as specified.
vIn testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY MCOURRY.
