BASH HOLDER No. 664,694. Patented July 28, 1896 MWM lNl/E/VTUR Z cfaZmrZvm I Arm/Mira WITNESSES: J7 7 'M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM FREDERICK JOHNSTON, OF WEST POINT, NEW YORK.
SASH-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent INC, 564,694, dated July 28, 1896.
Application filed October 18, 1896. Serial No. 566,080. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM FREDERICK JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Point, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVindow Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to window attachments, and the object thereof is to provide means to prevent the rattling or shaking thereof, a further object being to provide an effective device of this class which is secured to the outer side of the sash of the window and adapted to operate in connection with the beads or strips between which the sash is placed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which-- Figure 1 is a side plan View of a portion of a window-sash and the beads or strips connected with the frame between which the sash is placed; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, showing the attachment in full lines; and Fig. 3 represents a modified form of the attachment.
In the drawings forming part of this application, A represents the side of a section of a window-sash, a part of the glass being shown at B, Fig. 1, and B and B the beads or strips which are secured to the frame, portions of which are shown at O and D in Fig. 1, and the jamb of which is shown at E.
In the practice of my invention I form in the outer side of the sash A a circular chamber F, which opens at one side adjacent to the bead or strip B, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and secured within this circular chamber F is a sliding plate G, said plate being secured in place by means of a setscrew H, which passes through a longitudinal slot g, formed in said plate, and by means of this construction the position of the plate may be adjusted within the circular chamber with reference to the bead or strip B.
Secured to one end of the plate G is a spring-ring K, said ring being formed of a strip or plate of spring metal and being divided or open, and one end thereof being connected with a pin secured to the end of the plate G, as shown at k, and the other end being carried around and spliced to or lapped over the circular portion, as shown at k.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
When the sash is in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the spring-ring K will press against the bead or strip B and the rattling or shaking of the sash will be prevented and the pressure upon the strip or bead B may be regulated, as desired, by means of the adj ustable plate G.
My invention is not limited to the exact form or construction of the spring K, and instead of employing one of such rings I may employ a number thereof, each of which is secured to the pin 70, as hereinbefore described, this form of construction being shown in Fig. 3, and it is evident that other changes in and modifications of the construction herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages; and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An attachment for window-sashes, comprising a spring-ring, which is divided and one end of which is secured to a plate, in which is a longitudinal slot, said plate being adapted to be secured to the side of a window-sash, and to operate in connection with one of the beads or strips of the frame, to prevent the rattling of the window, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention'l have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 16th day of October, 1895.
WILLIAM FREDERICK JOHNSTON.
