CATTLE-TIE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 672,134, dated April 16', 1901. Application filed 00am 8.1897. Serial No. 654,515. or. model-l To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID E. PUGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Watertown, in the county of Jeiferson and State of Wisconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention contemplates a simple, economical, strong, and durable cattle-tie having the advantages hereinafter set forth.

It therefore consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts specified with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents an elevation of my improved cattle-tie partly in section, as indicated by line 1 1 in the succeeding figure; and Fig. 2, a plan view of the same partly in section, as indicated by line 2 2 in the preceding figure.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A B represent contour in hingejoint connection at their lower ends. The collar-section Aisfiidest at its upper end, and thisend is provided with a recess for-the engagement of the corresponding end of the other collar-section.

A longitudinally-slotted guard-lug C, rising from the upper end of collar-section B, constitutes a keeper for a spring-latch D, made fast on collar-section A and extended therefrom. The lower inner face of lug O is beveled to cause lift of the correspondinglybeveled portion of spring-latch D coincident with an engagement of the upper ends of the collar-sections, and this engagement being effected the shoulder b of said latch automat= ically finds locking position opposite said lug, as best illustrated in Fig. 1. When the collar-sections are latched together, the lug O protects the latch, and said lug also serves as a convenient handle for the collar-section of which it forms a part. The outer extremity of the latch D is preferably arched, so as to come close to collar-section B out of the way when the upper end of this collar-section is engaged with collar-section A, and the arch constitutes a convenient finger-grip for elemetal collar-sections of suitable=- vating said latch when it is desirable to open the collar. I

A neck-shield E is shown made fast to collar section A as a-matt-er of convenience; but

it is just as practical to fasten the neck-shield to the other collar-section. The collar-section A is shown provided with a loop 0 intermediate of its ends; but this loop may be in the same position on the other collar-section to constitute a holder for a chain F of any desirable length, that connects with a vertical'oo guide G, upon which it has free play.

From the foregoing it will be seen that my improved cattle-tie may be readily put in position on the neck of an animal and as readily detached. The animal secured by the'tie is not only free to move its head in a vertical direction, but also sidewise, whether stand ing up or lying down, and is thereby more comfortable, especiallyin liy-tine. The tie being wholly of metal, it is more than ordina- 7n rily strong, and thefiifore particularly adapt- "ed to unruly animals.

Having thus described my invention, what 4 I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A cattle-tie comprising a pair of metal sections in hinge union at their lower ends, one of which sections is widest at its upper end and provided with a recess, a longitudinallyslotted lug rising from the upper end of the other of said sections and engageable with the recess aforesaid, a spring-latch fast to the recessed section to extend through the ln g' of the other section and hold against the same, said -lng constituting a guard for the latch and having its lower inner face beveled to facilitate engagement therewith of said latch, and an outer loop on one of the aforesaid sections for connection with a chain.
