S. I. SILSBY.
HITGHING DEVICE. No. 371.102. Patented Oct. 4, 1887.y
UNITED STATES' PATENT OFFICE.
SETE I. SILSBY, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
HITCHING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,102, dated October 4, 1887.
(No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH I. SILSBY, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hitching Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in bitching-posts, the object being to provide a cheap, simple, and effective hitching device, whereby either one or two horses may be hitched to a single post; and my invention consists in the special construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of a hitchingpost constructed in accordance with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A is the post, which may be of ordinary construction, and to the same is attached my improved hcad or fastening device B, which consists of a body portion, C, which is preferably of cast metal, the same being provided at its lower portion with a projection, a, smaller than the body C, thereby forming a shoulder, a. Through the projection a a bolt passes for attaching the same to the upper end of the post A. The sides of the head taper upwardly and outwardly, while the top is beveled, as shown, so that snow or ice will not collect on the same, and the edges are serrated or roughened, as shown at d. The opposite sides of the head are preferably flat, as shown, and forni a convenient space for attaching a name-plate thereto. Immediately above the post the head is provided with a horizontal rectangular opening, D, which is of sufficient size to permit straps `or loops being passed through the same.
Near the upper central portion, adjacent to the top of the head, are attached links or hails E, which are secured thereto by suitable piv ots, e e. These bails are adapted to be swung upwardly by hand, and will fall in a position to loc-k or bind the strap or other fastening placed under them by gravity, and the inner faces of the cross-bars E of the hails E are also roughened or serrated, so as to give them a better hold upon the strap or other fasten ing device.
XVhen it is desired to attach a horse to my improved bitching-post, the halter-strap is first passed through the rectangular opening D, and one of the hails is raised and the end 'of the strap passed over and down between the bail and the post, after which the bail will fall, so as to grasp the stra-p securely between the serrated faces of the bail and head, and any pulling upon the end of the strap will only tend to draw the bail downwardly, so as to render the locking more secure. To release the strap it is only necessary to elevate the bail and withdraw the free end thereof.
As the block which is attached to the end of the post is provided with two bails, it is evident that two horses can be hitched to the same post.
The device herein described is very simple and effective, and is not liable to get out of order.
l. In a bitching device, a head constructed substantially as shown, and provided with a transverse central opening, and bails pivotally attached thereto, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a hitching-post, of the head provided with a transverse opening, D, and hails pivoted above said opening, said bails having'serrated faces, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in a bitching-post, of a head formed of a suitable. casting provided with an inclined top and a central opening, D, said head having serrated faces d, and bails E E, pivoted to, said head, having the inner faces of the cross bars thereof serrated, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SETH I. SILSBY.
Vitnesses:
THOMAS J. SEEHOEN, HENRY ROOT.
