SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 795,156, dated July 18, 1905.

Be it known that I, PETER N. NELSON, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Oldham, in the county of Kingsbury, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iame-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to haine-fasteners, and has for its object to provide such a device which will be simple of construction and cheap ot' manufacture and by means ot' which the lower ends of the hames may be quickly and securely fastened or unfastened.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion ot' a pair ol hames provided with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view of a fastener opened. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the fastener closed. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4 ot Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse section with the parts closed. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the notched end portion of one of the members.
Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a member 5, having' a general curve throughout its length and which is provided with a hooked end 6, the opposite end 7 having a slot 8 therein, which communicates with the upper face of the member. The bottom of the slot8 is curved moreabruptly than is the member 5, so that at its inner end the bottom ot the slot slopes to the upper tace of the member. Pivoted to the member 5 by means ot' a pin 9 there is a yoke l0, the legs 11 and 12 oi' which are disposed at opposite sides oiI the member and receive the pin 9 in pert'orations 13 in their ends. The yoke has a tinger-pieee 14 extending from its bight 14, and between the free ends ot' the legs and the bight 14 the legs are provided with alining perforations 15, which receive a pin 16, the ends oitl which extend beyond the outeri'aees of the legs and have engaged therewith the ends ot' links 17 and 18, which extend to a point beyond end 7 of the member 5, where they are connected by means of a pin 19.
The member 5 is provided with a notch 5 in its under faceadjacent to its hooked end and, as shown, the yoke 10 is movable to bring the pin 16 into this notch, and when in such position the bight 14 of the yoke lies beneath the hooked end 6 of the member 5 and the linger-piece 14 extends therebeyond. rlhe links 17 and 18 when the yoke is in the position just mentioned lie above the center of the pivotal connection of the legs of the yoke with the pin 9, and the pin 19 lies in a notch 2O in the end 7 of the member.
In connection with the portions just described there is employed a member 21, consisting of a thin curved portion 22, having a longitudinal rib 23 projecting centrally from its under face. The curve oi' the portion 22 is substantially the same as that of the upper 'face of the member 5, while the rib 23 is curved at its lower edge to correspond with the curve of the bottom of the slot 8, and, as shown, the rib may be disposed in the slot with the portion 22 lying' against and conforming to the curve of the upper face ot the member 5. One end 24 of the member 21 projects beyond the end. 7 oi' the member 5 and is provided with a hook 25, and the rib 23 is provided with a series ot' notches 26, which are arranged t'or the reception of' the pin 19.
In use the hooks 6 and 25 are engaged with the loops at the lower ends of the haines and are bent to prevent their disengagement therefrom. It will be apparent that the members 5 and 2l may be separated to allow the hames to be placed upon the neck ol the animal, and when it is desired to fasten them the yoke 10 is moved downwardly on its pivotal connection with the pin 9, which causes the pin 19 to move out of the notch 20 and away from the end 7 ot' the member 5. The free end of the member 21 is now disposed in the slot 8 and the pin 19 is engaged with one of the notches 26, after which the yoke is returned to its original position, and the member 21 is drawn into the slot 8, where it is held by the clamping action ol the yoke and the links 17 and 18.
In practice modilications of the specilic construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the IOO Various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is4 The combination with a pair of hames, of
' members connected to the lower ends thereof,
being movable to bring said ends of the links above its point of pivotal connection with the member, the links being bent inwardly toward each other intermediate their ends and extended in parallel planes beyond the free end of the said second member, and a pin connecting the free ends 0f the links and arranged for engagement in the notches of the rib interchangeably.
