HAME-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1909.
Application filed February 13, 1909. Serial No. 477,678.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN H. BANKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Otterbein, in the county of Benton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of hame fasteners or couplers of that class which are adapted for use in connecting harness hame members, and the objects of my invention are to provide a simple, reliable and effective hame fastening or coupling device of improved construction and arrangement of parts; to so construct my improved fastening as to admit of a ready connection or disconnection of the hame members; to provide means for adj ustably connecting the hame members so as to take up or let out the hames for use on collars of different sizes and to otherwise produce an effective hame fastening, which may be manufactured at reasonable cost and which may be readily adapted for the purpose for which it is intended. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved hame fastening showing the parts thereof in their coupled or fastened positions, Fig. 2 is an underside View of the same, Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of one of the fastening tongues which I employ in the manner hereinafter described, and, Fig. 4 is a transverse section on line m0a of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 and 2 represent respectively the lower end portions of ordinary hames or hame members.
3 represents a coupling or fastening member which is in the nature of a metallic plate or strip, slightly curved downward to conform to the curvature of the collar. This coupling member 3 at one end is looped into engagement with a link 4 which is likewise looped into engagement with the end of the hame member 1. At the opposite end of the coupling piece 3, the plate or metallic strip is bent upon itself to form a loop or eyepiece 3 from which said plate or strip is extended beneath and in the direction of the length of the body 3 beneath which said plate extension is formed with a downwardly projecting and elongated keeper-like loop or bend 3*, said plate extension being on each side of said loop or bend, riveted as shown at 3 to the body of the member 3. Engaging the elongated keeper 3 is a ring 5, said ring being movable in the direction of the length of the keeper and depending therefrom.
To the central portion of a transverse pin 6 which is contained within the loop 3, is hinged one end of a locking tongue 7 which is in the nature of a section of wire or rod, said locking tongue extending downward from the looped end 3' of the plate 3. This locking tongue which extends downward through an end opening in the plate 3, is bent to a substantially elongated U-form, or has its portions intermediate its ends depressed, as shown. With the end of the hame member 2 is engaged a connecting link 8, which also engages an end loop in a metallic plate tongue 9, the latter being formed with a slight upward curve, as shown and as indicated more clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawing, having formed at desirable intervals therein, openings 9*.
In utilizing the above described device as a hame fastening, it will be understood that the connection of the hames 1 and 2 is made by passing the wire tongues 7 downward through the desired one of the openings 9 of the tongue 9, thence closing said wire tongue inwardly or upwardly and so manipulating the locking ring 5 within the keeper 3 as to cause said ring to be slipped oven the outer end portions of the tongues 7 and 9, thereby locking said tongue 7 against downward or outward movement and preventing disengagement therefrom of the tongue 9. By this operation, it will be observed that a secure connection of the hame members may be readily and effectively produced. It will also be understood that in disconnecting said hame members, it is but necessary to move the locking ring 5 to the end limit of the keeper 3* and thence raise said ring over the end of and out of connection with the tongue 7. This being accomplished, it is evident that said tongue may drop downward and the tongue 9 readily disengaged therefrom.
Owing to the employment of a number of openings 9 in the tongue 9, it is evident that the length of the coupling may be regulated as desired.
By the construction which I have described, it will not only be seen that an effective fastening is provided for hames, but that said device is so constructed that the keeper 3* or other projecting parts are be neath or on the outer side of the main coup ling member or plate 3, thereby giving the latter a desirable bearing against the collar.
It will be observed that the parts of my device are such as to admit of their being stamped or otherwise formed and assembled at a comparatively low cost.
What I claim, is:
In adevice of the character described, the combination with the hame members of a tongue plate pivotally connected to one of said members, said tongue plate having a number of spaced, centrally disposed perforations formed therein, a plate extension the material of which is bent to form a body In testimony whereof I affix my signature 30 in presence of two witnesses.
