U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. l
ISAAC H. SOLOMON,. OF YORK, N. Y.
PICTURE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. $70,692, dated March 26, 1901.
Application filed August lS, 1900. Serial No. 27,298. (No model.)
To alt whom, it Hui/y concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC H. SoLoMoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Picture-Hanger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for permitting the adjustment of the picture-sustaining wire or cord, so that a picture may be hung at any height or inclination desired.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective view of the device in one adjustment. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the device in a second adjustment. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of a modified form of the guide. Fig. at is a detail perspective of one of the sliding eyes for adjusting the inclination of the picture; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of one of the dogs which hold the ends of the cord and which are adjustable to regulate the height at which the picture is hung.
The invention is adaptable to a pictureframe of any sort.
In the drawings, (t represents the pictureframe, and b the cord. Fastened to each vertical side of the picture-frame and at the rear thereof is a guide comprising a ratcheted portion 0 at the lower end and a plain guiding portion 01 at the upper end, the guiding portion being slanted outward slightly, as shown. Slidably mounted on the upper part (1 of each guide is an eye e, and these eyes are adapted to have the cord 1) passed loosely through them. The ends of the cord are fastened to slides f, which move on the. ratcheted portion 0 of the guides and which are provided with dogs f,
adapted to engage with the ratchets on the base 0 of the guides. The parts 0 and cl of the guide are separated from each other by a screw, such as is il1ustrated,or by other means,
so as to prevent interference of the slides by one slide moving onto the part of the guide which carries the other slide, or vice versa.
By adjusting the slides fon the ratcheted portion 0 of the guides the length of the supporting-cord b above the supporting-frame may be increased or diminished, and thus the height at which the picture is hung may be adjusted without changing the position of the picture hook or nail, which is fastened in or on the wall, and also without changing the cord or detaching the hanger from the frame, and by adjusting the sliding eyes 0 the point at which the cord 1) runs into the plane of the pietu re-frame may be regulated, thereby regulating the inclination at which the picture hangs with respect to the wall. When the slides e are moved upward in the position shown in Fig. 1, the picture hangs nearly vertical, and when the slides e are moved down, as shown in Fig. 2, the picture hangs at a much greater inclination to the wall.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A picture-hanger, comprising a guide divided into two parts, one of which is formed with ratchet-teeth thereon, a slide mounted to move on such ratcheted part and having a dog working therewith, and a second slide mounted on the other part of the guide, the firstnamed slide being adapted to have the picture-cord fastened thereto and the other slide to have the cord passed loosely through it.
2. A picture-hanger, comprising a guide divided into two separate parts, and a slide mounted on each of said parts, and the movements of each slide being confined to the part of the guide on which it is located, the lower slide being adapted to have the picture-cord fastened thereto and the upper slide being adapted to have the cord passed loosely through it.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAO I-I. SOLOMON.
