Description

@eine `tetes getint @ffice JAMES H. ORR, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO lHIMSELF AND JOHN I.
GILBERT, or sAME PLACE, SAID eILEEErAssIeNoE To LEWIS GRAVES, or THE SAME PLACE.
team Patenrlvo. 67,067, dared Juzg 23', 18674 IMPROVEMENT IN CHAMBER-FAES.
'IO ALL WIIOM ITMAY CONCERN:
Be itfknown that I, JAMES I-I. 01m, of Long Island City, in the county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented a new and .improved Chamber-Pail; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and 'exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in 4the art to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to the ordinary chamber-,pail now in common use; and it consists in coinbining with the pail, in addition to the ordinary cover provided for it, a top or cap-piece or plate, of suitable form and shapeso that when placed over the top ofthe pail such pail can be used with convenience and ease to the person for the evacuation of the bowels, and in a similar manner, for such purpose, to the ordinary seats of lwater-closets, privies, and'other similar places; this cap-piece being arranged upon the pail in such a manner j as to not only be susceptible of attachment and detachment at pleasure, accordingas it may be desired to use the same or not, but also allow the ordinary covery to be placed upon or taken o` of the pail without necessarily removing the saidcap or top-piece.
In combination with the above, Ihave also arranged a sliding-cover or plate below `the cap-piece of the pail, (which is provided for the accommodation and ease of 'the person when using the pail for the evacuation 'of the bowels, as hereinbefore stated,) in such a manner that before the person removes or rises from the pail such cover or plate can be slid in and across the top of the pail, so as to tightly close it against the escape of any of the'obnoxious as well as disagreeable eiiluvia'whieh may arise from-the contents of the same. In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved chamber-pail is illustrated- Figure 1 being a central vertical section of the same. Figure 2, a plan or top view with its cover and cup or top-plate removed, showing the sliding-plate'partially slid in.
A, in the drawings, represents the body of the pail, which may be made of any of the usual shapes and sizes for a chamber-pail now in common use. B, the cover to the pail, which fits, by its angc C, in and around the inside of the top of the pail. Around the inside of the pail, a short distance. below its upper and open end, is secured ring or ange, D, upon which rests a cap or top-piece or plate, E, havingI in'its centre a hole,- F, similar 'in shape to that of the ordinary water-closet and privy-seats, this cap-plate E being made of suitable shape as to not only produce an easy and comfortable rest for the person when' seated upon it, for the evacuation of the bowels or for any other purpose for which the ordinary water-closet and privy-seats are used, but4 also enable the ordinary cover of the pail to be placed upon it, without requiring or necessarily removing the same, as is plainlyshownin fig. 1 of the drawings. As the cap-piece or plate E simply rests upon the shoulder or ringD around the inside of the pail, it can be readily removed therefrom or replaced thereon atl pleasure, thus not in the least detracting from the useof t'he pail for the purpose for which it is usually employed.
In order to enable the pail to be closed before the person using it for the4 evacuation of the bowels arises or removes from it, and thus prevent the escape of any obnoxious and'disagreeable eiuvia from the pail, arising from its contents, I have arranged below the cap-piece or plate E a cover orplate, H, so as to slide in and. out upon suitable ways or guides I provided for it upon and fixed 'to the inside of the pail, this sliding-plate H passing out through a slot or opening, J, in the side of the pail, for the closing of which, if' the said plate is entirely drawn out and removed from the pail, suitable sliding-doors K are properly arranged upon the outside of or around the pail therefor, las is plainly shown in g. 2 of the drawings.
From the above description of my improved chamber-pail, it is plainly obvious that for use in chambers it possesses many superior advantages and conveniences; that it adds but a triiing or small amount to the expense of the manufacture of the pail, thus adapting it to the poorer as well as the more wealthy classes; that it is extremely simple, and for use eiiective'and desirable to the greatest possible extent. l A
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The top-piece or cover E, constructed as described, its lower edge-or flange resting upon the ring D upon the inside of the pail, and having its opening F immediately over the sliding-plate H, as herein described for the purpose speciiied.
2. In combination with the sliding-doors K and cap or top-plate E of a chamber-pail, I claim the slidingplate orkcovcr II, substantially-as described and for the purpose specied.
JAMES H. ORR.
