IMPROVEMENT IN SPOONS.
@te Srigehxttc tefctnt tu im tigen tettets patent mrt netting niet at tige sainte.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, SOLNFARRER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Spoons; and I do .hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, referencebeinghad to the accompanying drawings making` a portion of this specification, in which- Y Figure lis a longitudinal section of a spoon made according to my invention.
Figure 2 is .a plan view of the same. Y
Similar 4letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to provide a spoon, by means of which soup, medicines, 815e., may be 'carried to the mouth without liability of being'spilled, or of siling th-e moustache, when such is worn by the person l using the spoon.. i
The inventionconsists in a movable cover, so combined with the bowl of the spoon that it may cover the greaterportion thereof when the same is filled, thereby securing the object mentioned.
The invention further consists in the combination of a lever and a spring with the spoon and the cover, in such manner that the'latter may bev very readily manipulated to close or open the bowl of the spoon when the spoon is in use.- i y To ena-ble others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceedto describe it with reference to the drawings.
'A -shows the bowl of the spoon, and B the handler of the same, these parts-being of any ordinary or suitable construction. At the-inner end of the handle, at a little distance from the bowl, is 4pivo'ted ashort arm, a, having attached `t'e its outer end a flat plate or cover, AC, which is of such length as to cover the bowl A, except at the end or 'side portion thereof, at whichfan opening is thus left or provided, as shown at 6. D represents a lever,`pivoted to the upper side of the handle by a transverse pivot, a', and pivot'ed at itsinner end to the adjacent extremity of the arm it of the cover C, and having its outer portion., Zw', forced upward or away from the handle by a spring, c, in vsuch manner as to tilt the arm a,fto lift or bring the cover C up or from the bowl to uncover the same, as represented in g. 1', inwhich open condition the spoon may be dipped in the soup or other liquid to becarried thereby, which being done, the bowl of the spoon `is conveyed to the mouth, simultaneously with which the thumb is pressed upon the outer portion b of the'lever D, to bring the saine 'toward the handle B-,Ithus bringing the cover down' upon thejbowl, as shown in g. 2, and also'indicatedby the red outline init-ig. l. The cover, by covering the greater portion of the bowl while it is being broughtto the mouth, obvia-tes all liability of spilling the soup, medicine, or other liquid, and furthermore, prevents the moustache, when suchis 'worn by the person usingthe spoon, from coming in Contact with and`being soiled by the contents of the spoon,l such contents being passed into the mouth through .the spaeevor opening at b, at the outer end or side portion 'ofthe bowl.
The cover C, being very readily operated or manipulated by means of the lever D, the spoon may be used `with very great convenience, and furthermore, the cover C being attached tothe arm a, instead of havingits inner end pivoted direct to the spoon, such inner end is allowed to risc somewhat when the cover is brought* away from the bowl, therebyenabling the pivot orjoint upon which the arm a, or in other words the cover, works, to be easily kept clean. I l
What`I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
1. The movable cover, in combination with the bo-wl of the' spoon, substantially as 'and for the purpose specied.
2. The combination, with the spoonand the movable cover, of the lever D and spring c, substantially 'as and for the purpose specified.` y
