ORAMEL N. WOOD, OF WINDSOR, ASSIGNOR TO D. M. SMITH, H. H. MASON, AND A. O. MASON, OF SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT.
Leners Patent No. 66,929, dans July 16, 1867.
IMPROVED VENT-PLUG.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known Ithat I, ORAMEL N. WOOD, of Windsor, in the county of Windsor, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and improved Vent for Cnsks, Barrels, dto.; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the sume, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved vent, designed to be inserted in casks or barrels containing liquids, to admit, when a liquid is to he drawn from a cash or hurrel, of atmospheric air entering the latter in order that the liquid may flow freely through the faucet.
The object of the invention is to obtin a. simple, cheap, and eicient vent, which may be very readily applied, and operated with the greatest facility. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 isa. side sectional view of my invention.
Figure 2, a. detached inverted plan ofthe cap pertainingto the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents a metal tube, having a screw-thread, a, on the lower part of its exterior, and two projeetin arms b, by which the tube may be readily screwed into o. barrel or cosk. On the upper part ot' the tube A there is also a. screw-thread, c, on which a cap, B, is'fitted, provided with an internal screw-thread, and with a handle, d, on its top for the convenience of turning it. This cap B is grooved internally, as shownnt c, four grooves (more or less) being cut or made the whole length of the interioi` of the cap; the grooves being deeper than the internal screw so ns to form air-passages within the ccp. At the inner part of the interior of the cap there is inserted a pcking,f, of leather 0r other suitable material, which, when the cap is screwed fully down, e'ectually seals the upperend ofthe tube A and prevents the admission of air within the barrel or cask.
When it is' designed to drew liquid from the Cask or barrel the cap B is screwed up, so that the packing f will be above the top of the tube A, and air will pass up through the grooves e into the top ot` the tube A, and thence into the Cask or barrel, allowing the liquid to ow freely through the faucet or spigot.
This vent may be applied to a cask or barrel in n. moment of time, 'and also readily detached or removed therefrom when required, and may be constructed at o small cost. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe tube A, provided with the external screw-threads a a, and the cap B provided with a. packing, f, and an internal screw-thread to it on the upper screw-thread c, and having grooves or air-passages c made-in it, all
arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ORAMEL N. WOOD.
