Gimlet Vientiduct. N0. 131,408'. 4 Patented Sep. 17, 1872.
- Witgeses nyentcr OWQW v www UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OB F. PEAOOOK, OF RENO, NEVADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN GlMLET-VENTI'DUCTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,4089 dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J. F. PEACOCK, of Reno, Washoe county, State of Nevada, have invented an Improved Gimlet-Ventiduct; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are suiiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to a device which I call a gimlet-ventiduct. The object of my invention is to provide a ready means of giving a vent to barrels, casks, and other liquid-containing vessels. My ventiduct will also answer for a sampling faucet.
In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A represents the handle of an ordinary gimlet havingthe shank B. At the extremity of the shank is a gimlet or other pointed screw, O, whose base, where it joins the shank, is of smaller diameter than the shank, and the shoulder d thus formed is beveled inwardly, as shown. A hole, c, passes diagonally through this screw, commencing at a point near the shoulder d and passing out at the side of the screw near the point, as shown. The screw is to be bored through a cork, if convenient, or it can be bored directly through the wood of the barrel, and when turned down so as to bind the beveled or saucer-shaped shoulder d against the wood or cork a perfectly air-tight and water-tight joint is produced, but when it is desired to give avent to the barrel, orsample its contents, the screw can be turned backward until the outer opening of the vent-passage O is upon the outside of the barrel, while the opposite end communicates with the interior, thus allowing the ,passage through it of either air or liquid, as desired.
The combination of this vent-screw with the handle A and shank B provides a neat, convenient, and useful implement; but, if desired, the handle could be dispensed with, and a square end be made upon the shank, as shown at Fig. 2, so that it could be turned by an ordinary wrench.
The faucet-ventiduct can be made of either wood or metal, and the screw C can be provided with any suitable style of screw-thread and penetrating-point.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The Ventilating-screw C provided with the vent-hole c, in combination with the shank B having an inwardly-beveled shoulder, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
