GEORGE W. BANKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Lette/rs Patent No. 87,021,
dated Februa/ry 16, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUNG--TAP FOR CASKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BANKnR, of St.
` Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missame, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which is represented a longitudinal section of a bung-tap construeted according to my improvement, different letters of reference indicating the several parts thereof.
This invention has for its object the pouring of liquids f rom casks and other vessels with more convenience, and less waste of the liquid; and
It consists in the novel construction of a tap, with a sliding extension, whereby liquids may be poured from a cask or other vessel with more convenience and less waste than by pouring from an ordinary bung not having my improvement.
In order that others may understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A represents a hollow metallic nozzle, constructed of brass or other metal, and is or may be provided, upon its inner end, with a screw-thread,`for connection thereof with a cask or other vessel. Said extremity is 'nr may be `constructed of a taper formation, for adaptability thereof to bung-holes or other openings of different sizes.
B is a screw-cap, or cover, `fitted upon the opposite end, for opening and closing the nozzle.
Within this hollow nozzle A is fitted a sliding extension or tube, C.
Said sliding extension O is of a cylindrical formation, and open at both ends, and is arranged to slide longitudinally within thc nozzle A, but is retained therein by meav s of bevelled flanges e c upon its extremities.
These anges c, when said sliding extension C is drawn or pushed through the nozzle A, are received within counter-sinks a a formed within the ends of said nozzle, which prevents, from either direction, its entire removal therefrom.
b isa packing, of India rubber, or other suitable Inaterial, provided within the cap, B, and so airan ged therein as not only to close the central opening of the sliding extension G, but also the joint e, formed between the outer surface of said sliding extension C and the inner surface of the nozzle A.
In the nperation of this invention, the apparatus having been previously screwed or otherwise connected to the cask or other vessel, the cap, B, is removed, and the sliding extension O drawn voutward until its inner bevelled flange c rests within the inner counter-sink a, whereupon, by vproperly tilting or turning the vessel, the liquid therein contained Amay be poured therefrom without the great loss caused by the running down of the liquid upon the sides of the vessel. After a desirable quantity of the liquid has been poured out, and the vessel readjusted, the sliding extension C may be pushed inwardly until its outer flange crests within the outer counter-sink a, whereupon the cap, B, may be screwed to its place upon the nozzle A, to close the same.
In connecting this apparatus with the cask or lother vessel, it is preferred to have it screwed or otherwise fitted to the opening, so as to bring its outer extremity nearly or quite even with .the outer surface of said vessel, so that a square piece of sheet-tin or other mateprotection thereof, substantial] y after the manner of treating the ordinarywooden bungs of barrels and other casks.
secured by Letters Patent, is-
The bung-tap, constructed `substantially as herein described, consisting of the screw-capped nozzleA and sliding extension G, combined and arranged as set forth.
