PATENT GEEICE IMPROVEMENT IN BUNG-SPOUTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,545, dated August 29, 1871.
i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN MARVIN and WIL- LIAM T. HULsE, of Port J eerson, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bun g-Spout 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghadto the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l represents a top view of a barrel provided with our improved bung-spout. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the spout, showing it on an enlarged scale, the line c c, Fig. 1, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 3 is a face View, partly in section, of the same.

This invention relates to a new implement to be attached to barrels or casks for the purpose of facilitating the discharge of liquid from their bung-holes. The invention is intended to supersede the primitive leather spouts now generally attached to barrel-brings wherever faucets are not to be used. It consists of a spout pivoted to a forked frame, which has a hook for catching under and a screw, key, or lever for bearing upon the staves, all as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents a frame or lever, forked at one end, and having a solid shank, a, at the other end. Between the fork is held and pivoted a spout, B, made of metal, wood, glass, or other suitable material, of about semi-cylindrical shape. Pins b b, projecting from the arms lof the fork or from the spout, serve as pivots for the latter, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 3. At the back or inner end the spout has aprojecting rim or shoulder, d, which, when it bears against the arms of the fork, will define the downward motion permitted to the spout.` The inner end or face of the spout may be grooved to receive an elastic packing, e, which, bearing against the barrel, prevents leakage between the barrel and spout. f is a hook, formed on the frame A between the fork, and projecting in a position opposite the spout, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. g is a screw iitted through the shank of the frame A.
The instrument is applied by passing the hook f through the hung-hole, making it catch over the edge of the stave, and then turning the screw against the barrel until the packed end of the spout bears rmly against the barrel. The latter can then he turned to discharge through the bung-hole.
In place of the screw a lever or key may be employed.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The bung-spout, composed ofthe frame A, hook f, pivoted spout B, and screw or binding-lever g,
and arranged to operate as set forth.
