4SE'IH C. CATLIN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 103,564, dated May 31, 1 870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIPHONS.
Mfg- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and-making part of the same.
To alll whom it may concern Be it known that I, SETH C. CATLIN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Siphons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,- clear, and exact'description thereof, whicliwill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates toa new and useful improvement in `siphons for drawing or transferring liquids from one vessel to another, and for all the purposes for which siphons are used, and it consists in an extension tube and valve-chamber above the crown of the s iphon, as will' be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved siphon, partly. in section, showing the extension tube or chamber with a valve therein, and a tubular stopper on the short leg for fastening the Siphon in the bunghole 'of a barrel. v
Figure 2 represents a valve detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
` A is the short leg of the siphon.
B is the long leg.
C is anextension of the short leg above the crown of the siphon, which forms a chamber.' The top -of the barrel or cask is seen in dotted lines.
D is the tubular stopper on the short leg.
E is the dischargecock on the end of the long' leg. F is a valve-chamber on the end of the extension C.
(1G is a perforated partition across the extension C, an
H is a small chamber above it.
The cap of the extension @is the seat of the valve J. The valve is confined on the cap by the flange K.
L is a thumb-screw in the top of the chamber'. F.
By screwing the thumb-screw L down, the valve is conlined to its seat.
The extension C, and the chamber and valve connected therewith, are for the purpose of expelling the air and fill-ing thesiphon. y
By inserting the short leg A into the liquid through the bunghole, (the cock E being closed,) and rapidly churning the siphon up and down a few times in the liquid, the air is expelled upward past the valve at every down stroke by the compression thus caused,
and is prevented from returning by the closing of the valve. The liquid follows the expulsion of the air, and the Siphon is immediately lilled, which fact is indicated by the discharge of a minut-e quantity of lthe liquid through the valve J.
When this discharge occurs, the thumb-screw L is turned down so as to close the valve, and the siphon isA ready to operate.
Two or three seconds of time only are thus required to till the siphon.
A valve may be placed in the lower end of the short leg, opening upward, by means of which the Siphon may be 'filled by the same act-ion, and, in transferring the Siphon from one vessel or barrel to another, such a valve might be convenient as a stop or retaining valve.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentp -Tlie extension C, with the valve J, chamber F, and thumb-screw L, arranged to operate, substantially as and for lthe purposes described.
SETH C. CATLIN.
