CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 668,433, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed August 20, 1900. Serial No. 27 ,380. (N model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. ANDREWS, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets; and I do hereby declarethe following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and
m which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a side view of one-half of a corset, illustrating my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view thereof.
This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, and particularly to that class in which the side or hip sections are reinforced or strengthened by overlying supplemental sections, so as to provide double bones or steels over the hips at the waistline.
The object of the invention is to so form the reinforces that they may have a sliding motion on the main portion of the corset, yet add sufficient strength to prevent breaking at the waist-line; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
The general construction of the corset is immaterial, but preferably, and as shown in the drawings, the side or hip section will be formed in two parts, A B, each of which is stifliened by a steel C, extending throughout the length of the corset. Superimposed upon each of these parts A B is a supplemental strip A B, each corresponding in width to the main sections A B and preferably extending from the lower edge of the corset upward to a point above the waist-line, and in each strip A B is a steel C, so disposed as to stand exactly over the steels C in the sections A B.
The adjacent edges of the several sections are seamed together, and over the central seam a stay D is secured, this stay extending from the top to the bottom of the corset. If the supplemental strips extend to the lower edge of the corset, they will be secured thereto by the usual binder E; but the upper ends of the strips, between their side edges, are separate from the corset, so that more or less independent movement is permitted. Prefer- 5o ably the upper ends of the strips A B will be rounded, as shown in Fig. 1, which gives a neat appearance to the corset.
I am aware that corsets have been provided at the sides with supplemental sections or reinforces, and do not therefore claim, broadly, such as my invention; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A corset having a side section with steels extending throughout its length on opposite sides of a central line, and a supplemental section secured by its side edges over the side section, united at its lower edge with the lower edge of the corset by a binder, and extending from the lower edge of the corset upward to a point above the waist-line, steels in said supplemental section disposed to lie over the steels in the side section, and a stay extending from top to bottom of the corset outside of the supplemental section between the steels thereof, and secured to the corset and supplemental section throughout its length, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib- Witnesses:
WILLIAM M. Trrus, J OSEPH A. ORDWAY.
