' TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J. DODGE of Louisville,`in the. county of Jeierson, and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following" is a full, clear, exact description thereof, reference being hadvto thc-accompanying drawings, making part' of this specicatiomand to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts, wherever they occur.
'.lo enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
f My invention consists in certain improvements on the Washing machine patented to C. Cyphurs, October 25, 185)4 y i Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section. Figure 2 is a bottom view of the rubber detached; and Figures 3, 4, 5, and-6,'are views of portions represented in detail.
In its general features, my Vmachine resembles that described in the patent referred to, and consists like that of an oblong box, A, mounted on legs of suitable height, having a scr-ics of slats, o, suspended on rubber straps stretched longitudinallytherein, these straps'being connected at each endof the box A to a rod, b, which is fastened by 'wire springs at each end tol a stationary rod, c. Near each end the rubber straps may be provided with buckles, as represented at e, for tightening or adjusting'thc belts and slats, as may be required. To prevent this series of slats from swaying toand fro, when the rubbingframe D is worked to and fro thercon,I: provide the central slat n with a metal plate, d, at each end, there being a hole in the plate, as represented in iig. 6.,- I then provide a metal rod, p, and attach its lower end to the side of the box A by screws, as shown in figs. 4 and*V 5, and then slip the plate d thereon, and then slip the metal piece m over the upper end of the rod' j), and screw it fast to the side of the box, afs shown in figs. 4 and 5. By this means I secure a strong metal guide at cach side of the box, on which the slat n plays up and down, and by which the series of slats is prevented from becoming displaced, as iras frequently thecase Awith the machine as formerly constructed, especially t when, by the clothes accumulating at one side, one end of the slat became more depressed than the other, which permitted the other end toiiy or slip out of the groove intended to keep it in place. v 4
My next improve-ment eonsistsin providing the rubbingframe with a secon dary hinged rod, z', located in a much narrower space than that occupied-by the similar rod 7l, the object of'which is to provide mcans'i'or holding small articles which cannot be secured in the space intended for holding the larger articles. These rods Iz. and t' are hinged at one end to the end piece of the frame D, as shown at t, of iig. 3, and u'hcn closed are held shut by a spring-catch, which engages in a' notch on the opposite bentend of the rod. To place the clothes on the rod it is opened as represented in iig. 3, and the clothhung on the rod, and the latter then shut, and the Washing performed by `Working the lever E to and fro, by which -means thc clothes are rubbed back and forth over the Slat-sn, the elastic belts permitting the slats to yield, and at the same time tending to press or squeeze the clothes between the slats and the frame D.
My next'improvement consists in adding a clothes-box, C, to the end of the machine, as shown in ig.,1. This box is for attaching the wringer to, and tc hold the clothes both before and while being yvrung, the successive lots of clothes, after being Washed, being placed in this box, there being an opening, x, to permit the water to ilow back into thebox A as it drains from the clothes in the box C, or is squeezed from the clozthesby the wringer.- Y'
By these improvements the machine Ais greatly improved in its operation and eiiicicncy.'4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is-. n
1. Providing the rubbing-Tramo with the additional hinged'rod i, located in the narrow space, as described.
2. Securing the series of slats in place by means ofI the rodp, plate d, and piece m, arranged as shown and described.
J. c. DODGE.
