Letters Patent No. 65,713, dated June 11', 1861.
IMPROVED WASHING MACHINE.
@its Stigttnle retentit tu it igist Enters nttut mi mating nrt rf tige sami.
TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. F. WHEELER, of Sag Harbor, in the county of Suffolk, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, whielrwill enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speeiiication, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my improved machine taken through the line y y, fig. 1.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: x, rig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved washing machine, so constructed and arranged as' to wash the clothes quickly and thoroughly, and with a slight outlay of power. And it consists in the slide having prongs or fingers projecting from its lower side, and rack-teeth formed upon its upper side in combination with the box-cover and toothed lever, by which it. is operated, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the tub or box in which the washing is done, which is rectangular in form, and has ribs or slats B attached to its bottom to act as a rubbing board up'on the clothes being washed. C is the cover, which is hinged at one end to the side of the box A, as shown in iig. l. The cover C has a longitudinal slot formed through its middle part, as shown in rigs. I and 2, for the reception of the slide l). The lower part 0i' the slide D extends horizontally beneath the cover C, and has downwardly projecting prongs or fingers E attached to it, as shown in the drawings, to take hold of the clothes and'carry them back and forth through the tub over the slats or i ribs The part of the slide D that. rises above the cover C has tongues foi-:ned upon its sid-e edges, which enter and slide in grooves formedv in the sides of the cleats F attached to the said cover-C, as shown in figs. I and 2. Upon the upper side of the upper part of the slide D is formed or to il; is attached a rack, d', into the teeth of which mesh the teeth formed upon the circular lower end of the lever G, as shown in fig. 2. The lever G is pivotcd to standards H, the lower ends of which are attached to the cover C or slats F.l I is an inclined apron, attached to the upper edge of one side of the box A, and projecting outward and upward. J is a board, attached to the outer sides of the posts of the box A, softs to leave a narrow space between its lower edge and the apron I. The board J is designed to furnish 'a support for thc attachment of a wringer, the apron I conducting the water wrung from the clothes buck into the box A.
In using the machine, the cover C and its attachments are turned back. The wat-er and clothes are put into the box A. The cover C is then turned down to its place, and thc slide D operated by means of the lever G sweepingl the clothes hack and forth over the ribs B, washing them quickly and thoroughly in a very short time l and with a. comparatively small outlay of power.
I claim as new, andvdesire to secure by Letters Patent- The slide I),ha`ving prongs or fingers E projecting downuard from its lower part, and rack-teeth upon its upper part, in combination with the cover C, lever Gr, and box or tub A,substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth. F. WHEELER.
