UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID SPAIN AND BASOOMB H. REYNOLDS, OF NORTH LEWISBURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,065, dated April 2, 1878; application filed January 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DAVID SPAIN and BASCOMZB H. REYNOLDS, of North Lewisburg, in the county of Ghampaign and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Washing-Machines; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of our washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a detail view, thereof.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a swinging washing-machine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings fully illustrate our invention. V
A represents a rectangular box of any suitable dimensions, and provided with a handle,
B, at each end.
The sides of the box A are out down in the center, leaving the ends of the box higher, and
each end is provided with a stationary cover, G,with a downward-projectingstrip or flange, 0, along the inner edge of such stationary cover, to form a junction with the removable cover D, which fits upon the cut -out portions of the sides of the box. Each end of the main washing-machine box thus forms, as it were, a closed chamber, A higher than the center portion A thereof. By this construction of the box, as the same is swung back and forth, as hereinafter described, the clothes will have a chance, by the action of the water, combined with the motion of the box, to turn over at each end of the box.
Along each side of the box A, at thebottom, is secured a. cleat, a, and in these cleats are fastened a series of ribs, b b, which are elevated a suitable distance above the bottom, and extend from side to side, as shown. Each side of the box is also, above the cleat a, provided with a series of vertical ribs, 01 at. These ribs 61 are rounded on their outer edges, while each rib 1) forms on the top a central ridge, m, with convex surface g on each side .thereof,
good surface, over which the these two eyes are to be placed upon a double hook, H, thus suspending the washing-machine. This hook H may be suspended from the limb of a tree or other convenient place;
but we propose to provide a frame for the machine constructed in the following manner: I I represent two sills, provided at their ends with foot-pieces, and in the center of each sill is mortised an upright, J, held firmly in position by inclined side braces K K. L is abottom tie or board, the ends of which are cut out or forked to fit around the uprights J J at the bottom, and fastened by pins h h, thus forming the connection for the two side frames at the bottom.
At the top is a bar, 0, having its ends tenoned, and passing through mortises in the upper ends of the uprights J, and pins i are passed through the ends of the tenons to hold the bar 0 in place.
This frame can be easily and quickly put up and taken down, as occasion may require.
The double hook H is suspended from the center of the bar 0.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is g 1. The box A, constructed with high end chambers A, and provided with side ribs 01 and transverse ribs 1), elevated above the bottom, as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the swinging washing-machine box A, constructed as described, of the side bails E E, having at their upper ends the loops f f, and the double hook H, suspended from the beam 0, for the purposes hereinbefore described.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID SPAIN. BASOOMB H. REYNOLDS.
