WASHING-MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,546, dated July 4, 1893.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDERS P. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kasson, in the county of Dodge and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful lVashing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in washing machines.

The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of working body washing machines, and to prevent clothes being washed collecting in a bunch, and thereby increase the efficiency of washing machines.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washing machine constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail 7 view of one of the triangular projections.

1 designates a rocking washing machine body rectangular in cross section and pro- .-vided at opposite sides with segmental rockers 2 which are secured to vertical cleats 3 arranged parallel to one another, and secured to and extending vertically of the sides of the washing machine body. The segmental rockers are supported upon side bars 4 of a platform which consists of the said side bars 4, a connecting bar 5 having its ends conneoted with the side bars at the center of the same, and supporting legs arranged adjacent to the ends of the side bars. The platform is provided at the ends of the bar 5 with vertically extending triangular projections 6 which extend in the spaces formed by the vertical cleats 3 and the segmental rockers 2, and prevent the rockers leaving the side bars of the platform. One of the rockers 2 is provided at each end with a pivoted stop bar 7 which is adapted to be turned down into a vertical position and in engagement with the adjacent side bars of the platform to hold the washing machine body stationary. The platform is strengthened by metal rods 8 which connect the side bars and are arranged on opposite sides of the bar 5.

The washing machine is operated by a handle 9 secured at its lower end to the adjacent side of the washing machine body, and to a cross-bar 10 which is secured to the upper ends of the adjacent cleats 3, and the latter are extended above thebody. The top of the body has a transverse opening over which is arranged a cover 11, from the lower face of which is suspended an oscillating separator 12 which is adapted during the rocking of the washing machine body, to prevent the clothes being washed from collecting in a bunch in. order to expose the clothes more completely to the action of the water. The clothes during washing are thrown from one end of the body to the other over cleats 15 which are secured to the bottom of the body and form a rubbing surface. The oscillating separator is hinged to the cover, and may be lifted from the body by removing the cover, and it consists of parallel top and bottom horizontal bars 13 and 14 and vertical bars 15 arranged at intervals and allowing the water to pass freely through the separator. The cover 11 is provided with a handle 16 and has its longitudinal edges rabbeted to fit the adjacent edges of the top of the body, and it is secured in place by pivoted buttons 17.

It will be seen that the washing machine is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction; that the rockers are arranged at the sides of the body, and not beneath the same, thereby permitting a body of great capacity to be employed without becoming top heavy owing to the material lowering of the central gravity, and that during the operation of washing the clothes being washed are prevented collecting in a bunch, and are thereby exposed more thoroughly to the action of the water.
