To all'whom it may concern-.-

Be it known that I, CHARLIE rkirrirns, a citizen of the United States, residing "at Amherst, in the county of Buffalo, State of' Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and 'exa'ct -descriptionof the in vention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. V

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in washing machines particularly of that type including a rockable body portion which is provided with suit able compartments wherein air and water are adapted to be imprisoned -up'on rocking the body in 'one direction and released upon rocking it in the other direction to provide sufficient agitationofthe clothes and water in the body to properly wash said-clothes.

It is in general the object of the present invention to improve and simplify the structureand efficiency ofmachines of this character, and it is more specifically the object of the present invention to provide means within the body wherein when it is rocked in one direction water will be caught and held so that when it is rocked in the other direction'the water thus held will be elevated and then poured down upon the clothes in the body to properly agitate the clothes and promote the circulation of water through the machine, this means being used in connection with air imprisonment and releasing means for releasing air under the clothes.

With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of parts as more fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the appended claims.

Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View taken in a plane at right angles to the axis of the body. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken in a plane including the axis of the machine. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the water holding receptacles.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings there is shown a body portion including substantially semicircular sides 5 and the bottom 6 which is curved to provide the ends of the body. A cover 7' is provided for the body and has a central opening 8, the sides of the cover being inclined downwardly toward this opening *to provide proper drainage and thecover being secured to the sides and ends of the body above their top edges to provide a drainage pan for use should it bedesired to mount a wringer on the supporting body of the frame. To prevent spilling of water from this drainage pan upon rocking the body the upper edges of the-ends are turned inwardly as at 8. The frame for rockingly mounting this body com-prisessupports 9"of inverted U shape at the sides of the body and having their "legs connected by the cross braces "10 and carrying on their bightsbearings 11 which pivotally receive pintles 12 projecting from the upper central portions of the sides 5 of the body. The body is preferably braced by strips 13 secured to its sides and extending radially from the said pintles. For rocking the body a handle 14 is secured to one of the sides and extends thereabove.

.Awringer structure is :provided and comprises a spaced pair of bars 15 secured to the ibight portion :of the-support .9 and :to a brace 16 connecting the legs of said support and the upper ends of-=these bars carry a wringer mechanism 17 which is disposed over the opening 8 so that as the clothes are taken out of the body of the machine they may be wrung and the water permitted to flow back into the body. a

The bottom and ends of the body are curved to merge into each other and secured to the lower portions of the ends and adjacent portions of the sides are plates 18 which extend at an angle to the bottom and form therewith pockets, the top planes of which are inclined at an acute angle to the horizontal so that upon rocking the body air will be imprisoned in these pockets and released upon rocking of the body in the other direction at a time when the clothes and water have dropped over said pockets so that the air thus released passes upwardly through the clothes and water and agitates them to effect a cleansing action. Further agitation is effected by the provision of water holding members 19 which are positioned in the upper end portions of the body and comprise each an outer wall substantially vertical and spaced inwardly from the end of the body and an inner wall extending at an angle of substantially forty-five degrees to form a substantially V shaped crosssection.

Provision of these water holding members also conduces to a greater circulation of water in the body in that when the body is rocked, the clothes lodge between the member and the end of the body and are thus held while the water fiows past and into the member.

While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I have merely done so for the sake ofrconvenience and I- do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the details of construction thereof without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is: a

1. In a washing machine of the class de scribed, the combination with a supporting frame, of an oscillatory clothes receptacle mounted therein having a rounded bottom, a

cover for the receptacle, laterally extending arcuate plates disposed on opposite sides of the said bottom and each having their upper edges secured to the bottom, the body portion of each of said plates being curved inwardly, outwardly and downwardly with respect to the receptacle bottom to provide air pockets,

substantially V-shaped laterally extending plates arranged above, said air pockets and spaced from the end walls of the receptacle, and supporting braces for the said V-shaped plates mounted upon the arcuate plates whereby when the receptacle is rocked in one 7 direction, water may pass up between the arcuate plate and the V-shaped plate above to be deflected into the latter by the end wall and cover of the receptacle.

2. Ina washing machine of, the class described, the combination with a supporting frame, of an oscillatory clothes receptacle mounted therein having a rounded bottom,

a cover for the receptacle,- laterally extend ing arcuate plates disposed on opposite sides of the said bottom to provide downwardly opening air pockets, substantially Veshaped laterally extending plates arranged above said air pockets and spaced from the end walls of the receptacle and from said areuate plates.
