CLOTHES-WASHING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914.
Application filed March 5, 1914. Serial No. 822,578.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. OELLIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 7501 Ellis avenue, Maplewood, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Clothes-Washing Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and the object is the provision of a machine of simple, durable and inexpensive construction which will wash the clothes or fabric in a rapid and efficient manner without injury to the clothes or fabric.
\With this object in view my invention consists of a washing embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as shown, described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of a washing machine constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the pan or tray for holding the clothes, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of one of the novel spring supporting members for the pan.
In the drawings: the numeral 1 designates the tub or receptacle, 2 the hinged cover having an elongated slot 3 in its upper wall, and L the legs supporting the structure.
Upon a transverse shaft 5, bearing in the cover is mounted a lever 6, having an operating handle 7, extending through and adapted to move in the slot of the cover, and to each end of the lever is hung a pounder or agitator 8.
From this construction it will be understood that the movement of the handle rocks the lever and imparts a vertical movement to the pair of pounders which depend into the perforated pan 9, which holds the clothes, the pan having upon each end wall 10, at 1ts upper edge, a pair of perforated ears 11, which fit upon the lugs 12, at the ends of the wire members 13, having each a spring coil 14, surrounding the disks 15, sald disks and spring coils being retained in place by means of the brackets 16, secured by fastenings 17, to the end walls of the tub.
In use the tub is partially filled with water to submerge the pan which contains the soiled clothes, the movement of the handle rocking the lever and reciprocating the pair of pounders to pound or agitate the clothes and effect the thorough cleansing thereof.
The pan has a spring or yielding support and is tilted by the action of the pounders as shown in Fig. 1.
I claim:
The washing machine herein described, consisting of the receptacle, the cover therefor, the pair of disks secured on the end walls of the receptacle, the pair of wire members having each an intermediate spring coil seated upon said disks and having a lug at each end, a pan arranged in the bottom of the receptacle and having end walls provided with perforated ears to fit upon said lugs of said wire members to provide a spring support for the pan, a handle pivoted in the cover, and a pair of pounders mounted upon said handle and arranged above the pan for pounding the clothes between said pan and pounders.
HENRY O. OELLIEN.
