Specification of Letters Patent.
7 Application filed May 16,1919. Serial No. 297,476;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. Bowsnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Celina, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be. a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswjill' enable others skilled in the art to which-it ,appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates towashing machines, and aims to provide a novel and improved construction of that character which issimple and inexpensive as well as beingthoroughly practical and efficient in use.
The invention has for its object the pro-' vision of a sheet metal tub provided with an interior frame to which the bottom and walls of the tub are secured, to renderv the tub rigid, and to also provide means against which the clothes rub to facilitate the washing and cleaning thereof when the agitator is o erated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparentas the description proceeds, the inventionresides in the construction and arrangement of parts'hereina-fter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the acc0In pauving drawing, Wherein- Figure 1 is a horizontalsection-of the tub above the agitator.
Fig.2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2.2 ofFig. 1.
2 extending in directions at right angles with one another parallel to the sides of thetub,fand said bars 2 crossone another near a the corners of the tub and arelocated near the respective sides, as clearly seen in F1 g. 1.
'Verticcl bars or cleats 3 are secured to the ends of the horizontal bottom bars 2 and extend along and are secured to the sides of the tub upon the interior thereof. Top b ards or pieces 4 a e e ured n the upper The tub 1 is of sheet metal and is of rec-, vtangular form." A frame is provided in the tub, comprising two pairs of bars or cleats ends of the bars 3 around the rim of the tub V I and provide a top having a central opening,
in which a cover or door 5 is provided, be-
ing hinged, as at 6, to one bard. Pieces 7 are secured to the under sides of the boards 4 and provide a seat for the cover'5, and'a suitable catch 8 can be used for holding the 7 cover closed. A wringer support 9 is preferably carried by the board 4' opposite to the hinge'6 for convenience in wringing the clothes. r 1 The frame thus provided within the'tub serves to render the tub substantial and rigid, and also provides means for theclothes to rub against in order to facilitate ,in loosening the dirt, when the agitator is operated. The vertical bars 3 are located near the corners, where the bars 2 cross, and 7 0" this arrangement'of the bars'2 and 3 will effectively serve the intended purpose.
The agitator is carried bv a vertical rock shaft 10 extending centrally through the cover 5,.and the agitator includes a hub 11 7 secured to the lower end of theshaft 10 and V Y having radial paddles .12 fastened 'by clips-- 13 to the hub. although a metalcast agitator can be used insteadof one built up as illustrated. The shaft 10 has a collar 14 to rest 0 upon the cover for supporting the dasherin its lowermost position, and the upper end of the shaft has a radial handle 15 for convenience in rocking'the' agitator, which in resting on the clothes will agitate them, by moving the clothes back and forth against the bottom and side bars or cleats 2 and 3, respective] y.
The tub an with suitable legs for supporting it above the floor. 7 e 7 Having thus described theinvention, what is claimed as new is 1. A washing machine embodying a tub, 95 bars secured on the bottom thereof and crossing one another v at a plurality of points near the sides of the tub, vertical bars secured to the aforesaid bars andthe sides" of the tub, said bars providing a frame on 0- d the interior of the tub, and an agitator to work within the tub. 1 x
