Description

t chines;
UNITED I STATES THOMAS cLU'cAS, Jn., or ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,135; dated February Q5, IBS.
' T o all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS OLUcAs, Jr., of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Maand I do hereby declare that the following is a full and true description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature `of this invention consists in the formation of a dat-bottomed box having circular` ends, when the same is properly counterpoised and pivoted in a proper frame, on
which it oscillates or swings; also, to the pe culiar arrangement of ribs on the liat bottom and at each side of the receptacle, by which the materials are turned and opened to the action of the water, the circular ends being smooth so as to allow the water to freely ascend said ends and spray over the material Operated upon when the receptacle is oscil lated. p
To enable those, skilled in the art to make and use my said invention, I will now more fully describe the same, referring to the annexed drawing, of which- Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevationgqand Fig. 3 is a top plan with parts removed.
The receptacleA is constructed with flat and vertical circular ends properly joined and hooped together. (See Figs. 1, 2, and 3.) The said receptacle A is properly oounterpoised by weights placed in a box, B, formed of pieces b secured to each side of the recepta cle A, andhaving proper sides, bottom, and cover, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Furthermore, said receptacle is pivoted by a rod, c, in proper bearing on aframe, C, on which it oscllates, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
e In order to operate the receptacle A, there is attached by proper sockets to said receptacle ahandle, G1; or said handle may be rmly secured, if desired. At the sides of the receptacle A there is arranged a series of upright ribs, a, having rounded edges, as shown in Fig. 3. At the bottom of said receptacle is arranged two or moreA horizontal ribs, al, having rounded edges, as shown, and near the circular ends of the receptacle A is arranged the larger ribs a2 having a curved shape, (see Fig. 1,) for the purpose of allowing the material acted upon to readily pass into the ends of the receptacle, and at the same time offering a resistance to the passage back of -said material from the ends. On the top of the receptacle A is arranged a door or opening, A1, for the introduction into the receptacle of the materials to be washed, the cover of which is arranged tot within the raised offset A2, and be secured therein by a turnbuckle or other suitable device. The back piece A3 to which a wringer may be attached. In the bottom of the receptacle A is arranged a proper discharge-opening, for discharge of water, as usual. The frame C Yis provided with a board, C2, hinged at c to said frame, so asto form a support for a tub or other vessel used in rinsing rI he receptacle yis constructed without any ribs for washing fragile material, so that the water, in passing from one side to the other, passes up and around the circular ends, and is sprayed over the clothes or material iu the receptacle, and thereby eectually washes the same; and, furthermore, when ribs are used on the bottom of the receptacle in conjunction with the smooth circular ends, the material is exposed to a rubbing, turning, and openin g process, which, in connection with the sprayin g process of the circular ends, is highly useful for the purpose of olea-nin g said mate rial".
Itis also evident that this method of operation and construction is equally applica ble for churning processes, in` which case the edges of the ribs will be square instead ot' rounding.
Having thus fully described my invention,
1. The receptacle A, vided with a liat bottom and vertical circular ends, in combination with the counterpoise B and frame C, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The receptacle A, when the same is provided with a iiat bottom and vertical circular ends and ribs a. al a2, in combination with the frame C and counterpoise B, as land for'the purpose set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand.
