UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
EVAN A. JONES, OF WOI OOTT, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,109, dated July 27, 1875; application filed April 26, 1875.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVAN A. JONES, of Wolcott, in the'county of White and in-the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification:
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in' which- Figurel is a vertical section of my washingmachine. Fig. 2 is a detached section of a part thereof.
A represents the tub or box, supported upon suitable legs, and provided in the center of its bottom with a cross-bar, B. On each side of this cross-bar is a series of rollers, O 0, running parallel with the same, and arranged in inclined or curved form, as shown. Around the interior of the box A, at the top, is a frame, D, the aperture in which is closed by a lid, E, hinged to the box at the front side. On the side pieces of theframe, near each side of the box A, is secured a bar or cleat, H, between which and the side of the box is pivoted a lever, G, that extends through a slot, at, in the side piece of the frame, down into the box near the bottom thereof. The lower ends of the two levers G G are formed with inclined sides b b, on which are secured the corrugated wash-boards I I. The upper ends of the levers G G are formed with tenons, on which are,
placed a cross-bar, J, connecting them, said cross-bar being held in place by means of pins b b, which are locked by buttons cl (1, as shown. To the center of the crossbar J is secured a lever or handle, K, which extends toward the front, and by means of which the wash-boards I I are moved back and forth. To each side of each lever G, above the pivot-point of said lever, is attached a slide, L, which is placed in the groove formed by the side of the box and the bar or cleat H. The inner lid of this slide is inclined and hollowed out, as shown at 00 in Fig. 2. As the levers G turn upon their pivots back and forth each lever draws the slides back and forth, lifting their inner concave ends so as to close the opening a,
after the lever, and thus preventing the water from splashing up through said opening.
This washing-inachineis simple, substantial, and durable, and not liable to get out of order.
Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the pivoted levers G G, carrying the wash-boards I I, the crossbar J,- pins 1) I), and buttons (1 d, substantially as E. A. JONES.
