lMPROV EMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,545, dated J une 4, 1872.

To all whom it mag concern:

Be it known that we, GRANVILLE H. Asuwon'rn and ABRAHAM F. VAN Voonnrs, of Arcola, in the county of Douglas and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing-lllachines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to theletters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmaohine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which' Figure 1 is a vertical section of our entire washing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the interior revolving cylinder.

A A represent two octagon or polygonalshaped heads, connected on the edges of their sides by slats B B. At the corners they are also connected by slats O O, which project inward a suitable distance beyond the slats B B, so that when the cylinder revolvesthese projecting slats will carry the clothes up from the suds and drop them in a different position on the bottom of the cylinder in the-suds, doing its work quick and easy, and without injury to the tenderest fabric or the removal of a single button. A portion of this cylinder is made separate, to form a lid, and hinged tothe main part. In the center of the heads A A are inserted journals to a, one of which is formed with a crank, b, for rotating the cylinder, and said journals rest in suitable bearings formed in the sides of abox, D, made of any suitable form or shape to hold the suds and have the cylinder revolve within it. The box D is provided with, or formed with, a lid, so as to entirely inclose the cylinder.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The revolvingzcylinder, formed of the polygonal-shaped heads A A and slats B B, with the corner slats O O projecting inward beyond the slats B B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. V
