WASH-BOARD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,729, dated June 4, 1889.

Application filed December 4, 1886. Serial No. 220,716. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ISAAC N. POE, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVash-Boards; and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my washboard from one side. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same from the opposite side, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged section upon lines as 00 of Figs. 2 and 3.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The design of my invention is to increase the capacity and usefulness of wash-boards; and to this end said invention consists, principally, in a wash-board which is provided with a corrugated metal body that upon one face has plain smooth ribs and upon its opposite face has its ribs divided into short sections by small cross-grooves, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.

It consists, further, in a wash-board which has a metal body that upon one face is provided with plain transverse ribs and grooves, and upon its opposite face has transverse ribs and grooves and small cross-grooves, which pass through the tops of said ribs, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.

In the carrying of my invention into practice I employ a sheet of heavy metal A, preferably zinc, which by any usual means is corrugated longitudinally, so as to form upon each side alternate ribs a and grooves a.

. The sheet or body A is .now placed within suitable dies, and within each rib a of one face is formed a series of equidistant shallow notches or grooves a which are arranged at a right angle to the longitudinal axis of said rib, so as to dividethe top of the same into a series of.short sections. Said cross-grooves are preferably made shallow, but may have any depth desired. The body A thus constructed is inclosed within a frame composed of two side bars 13 and B, that are grooved within their inner sides to receive the edges of said body, two cross-bars C and D, which extend between said bars and embrace the lower and upper edges, respectively, of said body, a third cross-bar E, that extends between and is secured to the upper ends of said side bars, and a panel F, which fills the space between said cross-bars D and E and side bars B and B. At the lower edge of the panel F is a ledge g, which is preferably formed by the insertion at such point of a supplemental cross-bar G, but may, if desired, constitute a part of the cross-bar D.

The wash-board thus constructed possesses a material advantage over those heretofore used, as its two rubbing-surfaces have such differences as to adapt them to entirely different kinds of fabrics, the plain grooved surface being adapted for use in the washing of thin, light, and but little soiled articles, while for .thick and heavy articles, or those much soiled, the doubly-grooved rubbing-surfaceis best.

While the cross grooves are preferably formed at a right angle to the main grooves and the ribs, any other angle desired may be used without departure from the spirit of my invention.

I am aware that it is not new to form a series of longitudinally-arranged depressions in. the grooves or ribs of a corrugated wash-board plate, and therefore do not claim such construction.

Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim is 1. A wash-board which is provided with a corrugated metal body that upon one face has plain smooth. ribs, and upon its opposite face has its ribs divided into short sections by small cross-grooves, substantially as and for the pu rpose shown. Y

2. A wash-board which has a metal body that upon one face is provided with plain transverse ribs and grooves, and upon its opposite face has transverse ribs and grooves and small cross-grooves which pass through the tops of said ribs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
