J. M. PETREE.
' WASHBOARD'.
Patented Sept. 28,1886.
ATTORNEY K UNITED STATES JOHN M. PETE- aw CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK L. PALM, OF SAME PLACE.
WASH-BOA an.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,015, dateisep 1886- Application filed April 26, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. PETREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Janton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vash-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the washboard. Fig. 2 is apartial section through the wash-board on line 00 a. Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view through the board, as at 2, Fig. 1.
The present invention has relation to washboards; and its nature consists in the different parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawin s.
ln the accompanying drawings, A A represent the side pieces of the wash-board proper, and are held in the desired position in the ordinary manner. To these side pieces, A, is attached the back board, B, which is provided with the smooth flat surface.
To the side pieces, A A, are attached the cross-wires a a. Alternate wires extend from one of the side pieces nearly but not entirely to the opposite side piece, while the intermediate wires extend from said opposite side piece nearly but not entirely to the first-mentioned side piece. It will be seen that by this peculiar arrangement the spaces alternate,
thereby preventing the free flow of water from Serial No. 200,144. (No model.)
the top or upper end of the wash-board proper to the bottom or lower end of the same. 1. wires are securely held in their centers to'ill back board, B, by means of the staples C. These wires a are so adjusted that the spaces between them will be about the same as the diameters of the wires to. by providing the smooth fiat surface on the working side of the back board, B, and having said wires fitting closely to said back board, only the overflow of water will escape, except through the alternating spaces at the 50 edges of the board, thus retaining a quantity of water and suds on the face of the board proper for a considerable length of time, as it has to travel back and forth from side to side to escape from the board.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the back board, B, having a flat surface, the cross 60 wires a, attached thereto with suitable staples, each alternate wire having one end attached to one of the side pieces, A, and extending to within a short distance of the opposite side piece, and the other or intervening wires ex- 6 tending from said opposite side piece to within a short distance of the first-mentioned side piece, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 70 of two witnesses.
JOHN M. PETREE.
Witnesses:
