ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,561, dated January 22, 1901.
Application tiled September l, 1900 Serial No. 28,736. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT RUDKIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Branch, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops, of which-the following is aspeeitication,l reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in envelops, and has for its principal object to construct an envelop which may be sealed in such a manner that it will be practically impossible to open the same without detection.
Brieiiy described, the invention comprises a sealing-tongue which is formed integral with the sealing-flap of the envelop and which is adapted to be inserted through the pair of slits or openings formed in the envelop, the one at the cross-line of the sealing-Hap and the other below the point where the diiferent flaps of the envelop seal together, the tongue being adapted to be inserted through its slot between the back and front portion of the envelop and overlap upon the back, where it is slit, all of which will be hereinafter more speciiically described, and particularly pointcd out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, formi ng a part of this speciiicatiomand wherein like numerals ot reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved envelop in the open or unfolded position. Fig. 2 is a like view of the envelop when closed. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
The envelop consists of a rectangular front 1, having a sealing-flap 2, provided along the edge of its inner face with a gummed or adhesive surface 2', this front l carrying the end flaps 5 6, the flap 5 being adapted to overlap upon the flap 6 and be secured thereto, and a flap S, which is adapted to overlap upon the iiaps 5 6 and be sealed thereto, as in the construction of the ordinary envelop. The flap 2 carries an integral sealingtongue 3, which is gummed or provided with an adhesive substance on its underneath -face 4. The free edges of the flaps 5 6 are slightly curved or cut away, so that the same will lie below the crease-line between the front l and the iiap 2, as shown at 7, and directly in4 the creaseline between the front l and the flap 2 is an oblong slit or opening 9. A like slit or oblong opening lO extends through the flaps 5, 6, and 8 at a point in vertical alinement with the slit 9, through which the tongue 3 is adapted to be inserted before being passed through the slit or opening 9.
The manner of sealing the envelop is as follows: Assuming the same to be in the form to receive the letter or like, as in Fig. l of the drawings, and theletter placed therein, the gummed or adhesive surface 2 is moistened, together with a part of the gummed surface on the sealing-tongue. Only that portion of the sealing-tongue adhesive surface is moistened which is to engage with the flaps 5, 6, and 8, the outer end of the tongue adhesive surface being left unmoistened until the tongue has been inserted through the slit or opening l0 through the slit or opening 9, at which time the remaining portion of this tongue is moistened and sealed upon the envelop, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawlngs.
It will be observed that the portion of the tongue which is drawn through the slits or openings being leftV unmoistened until so drawn through may be readily handled, and a double seal is effected on the back of the envelop, a part of said tongue sealing upon the flaps 5, 6, and S, and the remaining portion of the tongue sealing upon that part of the tongue which is sealed to the flaps.
It will be observed also that in the construction of an envelop of this character various changes may be made in the details without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. An envelop having a sealing-flap provided with an integral tongue which is gummed along the entire length of its underneath face, said envelop provided with a pair of slits or openings, the one located in the crease-line between the front of the envelop and the sealing-flap and the other about mid- IOO way of the envelop-back, a portion of the tongue being adapted to seal against the baek of the envelop and a part thereof after having been drawn through the slits or openings being sealed upon the part that engages the back of the envelop, as and for the purpose described.
2. In an envelop, the front having end flaps which are eut away along their upper edges, and a sealing-flap which terminates in a sealing-tongue gummed on its underneath face throughout its length, the said envelop having a pair of slits, the one located iny the crease-line between the front and the sealingfiap of the envelop andthe other about centrally of the envelop-back, the sealing-tongue being adapted to partly seal upon the envelop-back With the outer portion of said In testimony whereof I affix my signature 3o in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT RUDKIN.
