GARMENT FASTENING. (Application filed Dec. 18. 1899.)

CHARLES HAZOR SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 665,479, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed December 18, 1899- .aerial No. 740,675- (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES HAZOR SMITH,
a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in a holding device intended for use by tailors, dressmakers, and other fitters of clothing, designed to temporarily secure in place the pieces of a garment as the same are fitted or adjusted to the wearer in the course of their manufacture. This has ordinarily been done by the use of common pins passed through both pieces of fabric, which makes the goods awkward to handle, is insecure, and interferes with the sewing up at the points of union.
The object of the invention is to combine two holding devices by means of an adjustable connection, so that said devices may be secured, respectively, to the adjoining pieces of the garment, adjusted to the proper position, and securely held there until the same is completed.
To such end the invention consists in certain novel characteristics contained in the preferred form of the invention shown and described herein, said characteristics being definitely pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a section in line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section in line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 an end elevation of the right-hand portion of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow 4 of said figure.
The preferred device herein shown contains two ordinary safety-pins A B. A plate 0 is bent about one end of the safety-pin A and secured by means of an eye 0 to a chain D, preferably provided at its free end with a ring d. About one side of the safety-pin B is bent a plate E, one end of which bears two ears 6, projecting in the same direction and embracing the other end e of the plate, which is preferably formed so as to act as a spring pressing toward the ends of the ears. Between the ears is pivoted a bent lever F, having a handle f, extending alongside of the plate E, and a short end f, extending toward the end e of said plate. Said lever is shown so arranged with reference to the handle f that when the latter strikes the plate E, as seen in Fig. 3, the short end of the lever will have passed beneath the pivotal axis, so that the tension of the spring tends to hold the lever in the position shown. This furnishes a secure grip upon the chain and at the same time provides easy means of adjustment.
In the use of the device the garments are placed upon the person who is to wear them, the pins AIB secured to the contiguous portions of the garment which need adjustment, and said portions then drawn up to a perfect fit and secured in position by adj usting the chain D in the clasp-plate E. The garment is then taken off and sewed up at the convenience of the tailor or dressmaker. It is impossible for the difierent parts to get out of place, and at the same time the pins may be located so far apart as to not interfere in the least with the sewing up of the garment between them.
While the fitting of garments, as described above, is the use to which I have thus far applied my invention, and while its utility for that purpose is evident, it is equally evident that it may be applied to other uses in which it is desirable to so connect any two parts that the space between them may be readily and conveniently varied. It will be understood, therefore, that I do not intend to limit the invention to the use hereinabove pointed out, but that I desire to claim it no matter what its function may be. As shown in the drawings and hereinbefore described, the device has the details of construction which I have embodied in it in reducing it to practical and operative form. It will be evident,
however, to any mechanic that these details may be greatly varied, the essential requisite being that the safety-pins shall be joined by a suitably-adjustable connecting element, so that the distance between the pins may be conveniently changed in the use of the de- For most purposes the chain will be vice.
found most desirable, for the reason that it is flexible, easily fastened, and very durable; but evidently the chain may be replaced by a cord, tape, or Wire or even by some device made up of parts adjustable with relation to each other. I desire, therefore, not to limit the invention to the combination of the exact elements shown in the drawings, but, on the contrary, to give it the scope indicated in the following claim.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination with the pins, A, B, of the plate, E, secured about one of said pins, having its two ends extending in the same direction, one alongside of the other, one of said ends bearing the ears, 6, and the other end extending in the form of a spring between CHARLES HAZOR SMITH.
