CAR-DOQR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,095, dated January 1, 1901. Application filed October30, 1899. Serial No. 785,147. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. HOERR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Oar-Door Fastener,of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates more particularly to a car-door fastener to be used in connection with a car having a flush door-that is, a door set into the side of the car, so as to be flush therewith. p 7
The object of my invention is to provide a car-door fastener which while simple of construction and not liable to get out of order will firmly hold a flush door in its closed position.
My invention consists,primarily,in the combination, with a car-doorfastener, of a member pivotally mounted on said fastener and adapted to bear against the door and hold it in its closed position.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a car-door fastener made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is afront elevation of the fastener and a portion of the side of the car to which the same is attached. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, the side of the car and door being shown in section; and

Myfastener consists of a hase-plate 7, from whichextends a sole 8, provided with an up Wardly-extendin g lip 9. These parts are preferably provided with a strengthening web or rib 10. Extending upwardly from the baseplate 7 is a portion 11, which acts as a rubknob to hold the door 6 out of contact with the side of the car while the said door is being moved back and forth. The fastener is held in position by means of a bolt 12 passing through the base-plate 7 and a bolt 13 passing through the rub-knob 11.
Pivoted to the lip 9 by means of a pin 15 is a substantially Lt-shaped member 16, which is provided with a curved end 17, adapted to is forced down into the position'shown in full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that the curved end 17 will bear firmly against the door 6 and hold same in its closed position. The seal-wire 21 is then passed through the openings 19 and 20 and secured by the seal 22. When it is desired to open the door 6, the seal 22 is removed and the part 16 drawn upwardly and allowed to fall in the position shown in the dottedlines in Fig. 2, when the door can be operated in the usual manner. It will be seen that my fastener is simple of construction and not liable to get out of order and at the same time that it will not only hold firmly the door in its closed position, but also enable it to be securely sealed. I am aware thata car-door fastener has been heretofore used in combination with a wedge, which was pivotally mounted to the car-door, so as to swing in aplane parallel to said door, and therefore I do not claim such construction.

In a car-door fastener, the combination with a bracket provided with a sole and upturned lip and having at one side of said sole an upwardly-projecting securing and rub plate, of an arm pivoted to said lip at the opposite side of said sole and adapted to bear against the face of the door, and means for securing said bracket to the side of the car above and below said pivoted arm, substantially as described. i
