EDWARD Y. MOORE, OF MILWAUKEE, IVISOONSIN.
CLAMP FOR SLIDING DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,886, dated November 4, 1890. Application filed January 2, 1890- Serial No. 335 ,566- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD Y. MOORE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Sliding Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to clamps for sliding doors; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a freight-car provided with a sliding door and a clamp constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the door and clamp, and Fig. 3 a horizontal section of said clamp.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a portion of a freight-car; B, a track secured to a side of the car, and O a door suspended from the track by means of traveling hangers D of any suitable construction.
Secured to the car is a bracket E, having a horizontal portion 1), approximately equal in width to the thickness of the door 0, and rising from this horizontal portion of the bracket is a vertically-disposed, but preferably inclined, portion (3, the side edges of which engage grooves d in a Wedge F, the top of the latter being extended outward from the inclined portion of said bracket far enough to form a grip e, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
In order to prevent withdrawal of the wedge F,I prefer to provide the inclined portion 0 of the bracket E with a longitudinal recess f for engagement with a pin or screw g, that has its bearing h on said wedge.
In practice the wedge F by its own gravity clamps the door O tight against the car, and thereby prevents said door from sliding in either direction. In order to permit travel of the door, it is necessary for the operator to raise the wedge by grasping the outwardlyextended portion 9 of its top, and the moment said wedge is released it falls back on the inclined portion 0 of the bracket E to clamp said door in its adjusted position.
By-the above description it will be seen that the door may be held closed, open, or
partly open, and that I do away with the necessity of a guard-rail to prevent said door from swinging out from the car.
While I have described the clamp in connection with a sliding car-door, it is obvious that said clamp may be employed in connection with any sliding door.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A sliding-door clamp that comprises a bracket having a horizontally-disposed portion approximately equal in width to the thickness of the door, a vertically-disposed portion rising therefrom, and a wedge loosely arranged on the vertically-disposed portion, substantially as set forth.
2. A sliding-door clamp that comprises a bracket having a horizontally-disposed portion approximately equal in width to the thickness of the door, an inclined portion rising therefrom, and a gravity-wedge loosely arranged on the inclined portion, substantially as set forth.
3. A sliding door clamp that comprises a bracket having a vertically-disposed portion and a gravity-wedge provided with grooves engaging the side edges of said verticallydisposed portion of the bracket, substantially as set forth.
4. A sliding-door clamp that comprises a bracket having a vertically-disposed portion provided with a longitudinal recess, a gravity-wedge loosely arranged on said verticallydiposed portion of the bracket, and a stop extended from the wedge into said recess, substantially as set forth.
5. A slidingdoor clamp that comprises a bracket having a horizontally-disposed portion approximately equal in Width to the thickness of the door, a vertically-disposed portion rising therefrom, a wedge loosely arranged ou the vertically-disposed portion, and the top of the wedge extended outward to form a grip, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VViscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWVARD Y. MOORE.
